How technology will impact the future of education sector
Technology has impacted almost every single aspect of our day-to-day lives, including how education is being imparted to the younger generation of today. Educators everywhere are making the best use of digital technologies to help students realize their full potential. Let’s find out how technology will impact the education sector of the future.
The next generation
While many might perceive the disruptions caused by new-age technologies as something pervasive, the younger generation treats it as the norm. The young adults and children constitute one-third of the Internet world today, hence, it isn’t surprising that this generation is far better connected and digital savvy compared to its elders.
The constantly evolving educational requirements for children combined with uncertainty surrounding the future workplaces implies that updating the children’s learnings and how they go about acquiring new skills has become a top priority for universities and schools world-over.
A survey carried out on 1400 educators revealed that the classrooms of the times to come will be all about personalised and self-paced learning. All educational institutions will have to take a student-centric approach, enabling children to decide their own learning objectives and speed of learning, depending upon their individual interests. All these efforts will be guided by video-based learning, chatbots and artificial intelligence.
The AI technology in education is focused on the identification of students’ knowledge level, followed by the development of a personalised curriculum for each one of them. For instance, Duolingo, which is an AI-enabled language learning platform is counted amongst the most regularly downloaded education apps across the world, having witnessed 50 million installations in the year 2018 alone. Studies have proven that spending only 34 hours using this app is equivalent to completing an entire language education semester at a University.
While AI-driven education apps are still fairly new, the success achieved by Duolingo is a clear indicator of the underlying potential in this sector. Studies have revealed that the market for AI-driven education will touch $ 6 billion mark by 2025. Majority of this market will be based in the US and China. Here’s some more insight into AI applications in education.
Chatbot tech is also rapidly emerging as an important tool in the next generation of education. These bots are meant to simplify interactions between computers and students. Some of the important benefits offered by this technology are:
- Self-paced learning: By tracking students’ performances and guiding them depending upon their individual requirements
- Instant feedback: By quick grading of papers with 92% accuracy
- Spaced learning: By using repetition and algorithms for memory optimisation
Educators today are using this new-age technology to ensure more engaged learning amongst students and to also reduce their own workload.
Even though video learning isn’t as innovative as the above-detailed technologies, 98% of educators consider it important with respect to personalized learning. While many institutions use videos in their modules, higher demand for this technology is expected to come from students directly, in the times to come. This is because video-based learning is convenient and improves student achievement by 82% and student satisfaction by 91%.
