8 Best Free Photo Editing Apps

These days pretty much everyone uses their smartphone to click photos and that means the market is flooded with photo editing apps. If you just got yourself an Android or an iPhone and are looking for an app that lets you touch up your photos, this list of best photo editing apps has you covered.

We downloaded many photo editing apps and tried to highlight apps that offer something unique or the ones that are the best among those with a similar feature set.

Whether you’re really into your photography or just an occasional enthusiast we’re sure you’ll find something interesting to do with these apps.

We’ve found the best free photo editing apps on Android and iOS and you can download some of these to take your photo editing skills to the next level.

Vignette

( Android )

Vignette offers more than 70 customisable filters and 50 frames in any combination to create many photo effects. Vignette is also a full-featured camera application, featuring digital zoom, time-lapse, self-timer and more. Vignette does not require an internet connection to process pictures like some apps, and does not upload your pictures to a central server like Instagram. Your pictures do not leave your device until you choose to share them.

PhotoDirector - Photo Editor

( Android, iPhone, iPad )

PhotoDirector is a kind of multi-purpose photo editor. When a massive multimedia software company like Cyberlink delivers a photo editing app to Android, you're going to want to pay attention.

You can quickly and easily add overlays to your images, and get creative with effects and different photos styles. Or, you can step things up a notch and make use of PhotoDirector's more advanced features, such as RGB curves and HSL tools.

PhotoDirector contains various tools to give an attractive and unique look to your image such as Effects, Mirror, Blender, Overlays, Scenes, etc. Select your desired option and choose from different filters and effects and apply it. It has more than 50 options to enhance your photo.

Snapseed

( Android, iPhone, iPad )

Snapseed makes any photograph extraordinary with a fun, high-quality photo experience right at your fingertips. Anyone can enhance, transform, and share their photos with ease using incredibly advanced features from the leader in digital photography software. Built-in Google+ capabilities make it even more powerful to share your images with your friends and family.

In addition to these, there’s a great selection of creative filters that you can use to convert your photos to black and white, apply textures, add blur effects, and otherwise enhance the mood of your images.

Aviary is a powerful photo editor which was created because its developers wanted a quick and easy way to edit their photos on the go with no fuss. The app includes all the tools you need and a super intuitive interface so you can get right to editing.

Aviary offers photo filters under the Effects button, but that is just one of 16 editing tools you have at your disposal.

In addition to the filter photos or filter effects, the other editing tool that lets you drastically alter the look of your photo with the tap of a button is the Enhance tool. It provides four options - Auto, Night, Backlit, and Balance - to improve or change the look of your photo.

Adobe Photoshop Express

( Android, iPhone, iPad )

Adobe Photoshop Express is a great all-around photoshopping app for Android. Photos on your smartphone are easily modified with just a few swipes on a simple interface. It gives you the feel of the PC Adobe Photoshop on your mobile device.

The absolute basics like rotation, cropping, red-eye removal and flipping are very easy to perform within the app. There is easy blemish-removal that rids your photos of pesky spots of dirt or dust. You can quickly control the color and overall appearance of your photos with options for adjusting highlights, shading, shadows, contrast and many more.

Autodesk’s Pixlr is a pretty good app for basic photo editing. The app has a neat interface that makes it easy to find effects and filters for you to apply. We found a very useful tool called “Pixelate” that allows you to quickly blur out any part of an image, apart from easy to use tools to edit the image. We also liked the fact that they use simple terms such as “Brighten” and “Darken” to name all of their editing tools as it makes the app more accessible to everyone.

This camera app is targeted more towards casual users of photo apps, as one look at its UI reveals. The app has tools such as collage, makeup, and filters, which do what the names suggest. It also has a fun feature that lets you click a picture and then tries to tell your age and gender based on that. If you care more about enhancing selfies and need a fun app for your photos, EditLab does the job pretty well. Alternatively, you may also want to check out Meitu on Android and iPhone, or Photo Lab on Android.

PicsArt Photo Editor + Collage

( Android, iPhone, iPad )

PicsArt Photo Studio is a super powerful photography, image editing, and drawing app that's like Photoshop, Flickr, and a professional camera all rolled into one. Teens using the app may occasionally encounter mature content, and the app features deep integration with Facebook.

PICSART - PHOTO STUDIO has too much functionality to cover adequately, but here goes: time lapse, burst, front and back cameras, effects, stickers, backgrounds, collage, drawing (on photo, blank, or background), thematic contests, photo search, Facebook integration (find friends, post), artists listing, networking with other artists (account profile, followers, notifications, followings, likes, suggestions for followings), gallery of interesting recent photos, and tagged photos.

Some apps such as Prisma and PicsArt are also worth checking out, but these apps weren’t as good as our top picks in this list for photo editing. Some paid apps such as SKRWT (Android, iOS) offer neat tools such as lens distortion correction, in case you need some specific tool that the free apps we’ve recommended don’t have.

We checked out lots and lots of apps to compile this list, but there are so many photo editors on Android and iOS that we’re sure we missed some. Which is your favourite photo editing app?
