Teacher Review

Zap Zap Kindergarten Math is a games-based learning platform, designed around a space ship exploring the universe, landing on planets to allow children to practice different mathematical skills. Excellent graphics are present from the start and accompanying spaceship sounds.

The initial set up is the most difficult part. Upon opening the app, an adult must first set up the system; permission is asked to access phone calls and storage, then an email address is required to save the child’s progress, after which they need to enter their grade, choose a character and watch a short cartoon introduction to the app. After this, it becomes much easier. Children are presented with a home page that holds a settings tab in the top right hand corner and displays four icons along the bottom: “Tests”; “Spaceship”; “Puzzles”; and “Navigation”. “Tests” lists the topics available, initially: Numbers; Shape and Measurement; Add and Subtract. By clicking on each section of the topic, users can see the available skills. For example, under Numbers, children must master the following skills: count to ten; count objects; read numbers; relate numbers to objects; compare number of objects; read numbers; count forwards; and compare numbers. The “Spaceship” area allows children to build their own spaceship using points awarded for successful completion of levels. “Puzzles” shows how far the child has completed each mathematical skill. While “Navigation” displays the location of the spaceship within each galaxy. From the main page, children can they navigate their spaceship to an appropriate planet (representing the skill to be attempted). If they want to play and level, they simply choose to land.

In terms of the actual game play, each game is different and uniquely designed for each specific skill. The developers state that these skills are aligned to international maths curriculums, including the Common Core State Standards. With so many different games, users are asked whether they would like to watch a tutorial, before playing. This takes them through how to play, explaining the game systematically using excellent visual graphics, alongside numeric representations and clear simple instructions. By the end of the process, they should know how to play the game confidently. Children must answer questions or solve puzzles throughout the game, and at the end of the game, are awarded a life bonus, star bonus and time bonus as well as given a puzzle piece. Children are guided through games – when an incorrect answer is given, the correct answer is displayed, and children are able to attempt the question again. A second incorrect answer skips the question. It is presumed that incorrect answers alongside the bonuses guide the adaptive features of this app, making questions more appropriate to the child’s ability.

Each game is thoroughly thought through and to offer so many games is an indication that the developer intends the app to have a long life span. Unlike other apps, this app is designed to accompany children through their earlier education.

Overall, an excellent app. Mathematical learning through game play is at the heart of this app. Children are continually engaged by the graphics and game itself.

Zap Zap Kindergarten Math includes a comprehensive suite of learning games that cover the most important principles of early math education:
Players learn to:
• Develop number sense
• Count to 100 by ones and tens
• Count forward and backward from a given number
• Compare 2 numbers as greater than, less than, or equal
• Understand mathematical equality
• Solve simple addition and subtraction equations up to 20
• Fluently add and subtract within 5
• Differentiate two objects in terms of physical attributes; i.e. size, height, etc.
• Identify shapes as two dimensional or three-dimensional shapes as two dimensional or three-dimensional
• Compose larger shapes out of smaller shapes
Our challenges are divided into the following:
• Number Sense & Recognition — Know the number names and the counting sequence. Count and identify the number of objects
• Plus & Minus — Understand addition as a concept of putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.
• Shapes & Measurement — Identify and describe shapes and measurement of physical attributes. Analyse, compare, create, and compose shapes.
