About Yousician Piano

Yousician is an interactive music app that’s designed to really provide a fully-formed experience for just about everyone to better their instrument playing. In terms of cost, Piano can be downloaded free of charge and you can access a limited number of the app’s lessons without having to pay a dime.

Teacher Review

The app works with both acoustic and digital pianos, as well as most kinds of devices. One of the features that make Yousician stand out is its exhaustive choice of learning options. Use Practice Mode to slow songs down. This will help you build the coordination you need to play songs up to speed. You can also learn songs in parts; then once you've mastered each part you can try the whole song.

The app is designed to give the player a chance to improve through practice and competition. When you’re starting, you can tackle the standard lesson structure, and as I mentioned, the lessons ramp up at a very comfortable pace. Students are ranked on their progress and can unlock the next level of their playing by accomplishing goals in a given category.  Yousician is also appealing because it uses a color coded system for fingers and letter names.

These lessons are created for you based on your progress in other areas of the app, and are found on the homepage of the Yousician app.
Depending on how much time you have you can go for the 10-minute “Quick” lesson, the 20-minute “Casual” lesson, or the 30-minute “Intense” lesson. Under the “Learn” tab in the app, you can choose between “Missions” and “Workouts”. Missions are set up to help you practice what you learned in the guided lessons.

Each level is unlocked as you complete the previous one, but you can challenge any level you wish by doing a quick skill test. The levels each contain a few video lessons, which explain the main concepts of the level.

Workouts are a great source for technique, scales, chords, and ear training. They’re taught with the same game format as the Missions. These optional weekly challenges pit you against students at your level, in general, or in your friends list.

The song library has a wide selection of songs available in levels 0 to 10 and in a variety of genres like classical, pop, blues, and even metal! Personal best scores and competing with your friends keep you hooked and striving for better accuracy.

When evaluated as a tool for learning piano by yourself, Yousician is best for those who like to figure things out on their own. The lessons have a bit less spoon-feeding than traditional piano methods, which is best for adults who want to learn quickly.

However, if you’re serious about using the app to learn piano or keyboard, a Premium or Premium Plus subscription might be worth investing in. Premium subscriptions unlock all lessons for $20/£20 per month or half that if you pay for a year upfront. Premium Plus unlocks all lessons, instruments, and those all-important famous songs, and costs $30/£30 per month or $180/£160 per year. Much less than a professional tutor and a bunch of songbooks, but hardly cheap. We’d recommend you try the app first and dive into the paid fare if you’re really serious about practicing.

The app is available for iOS, Android, and desktop, so you likely already have a compatible device. Overall, the Yousician method isn’t the only piano method that you’ll to need, but it’s a good foundation for whichever style of piano you choose to pursue afterward.
