Verb Cards: English Verbs Review
What is VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS app?
VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS is an app that contains a wide range of words in the English language as well as German, Portuguese and Korean. The aim of the app is to help speakers of these three languages learn English. They do this through learning the words on flash cards and marking their confidence in these words.
The app itself can be used by speakers of German, Korean and Portuguese who are looking to learn English as an additional language and therefore the app chooses the most important aspects of the English language that is going to have the biggest impact on learners by selecting key verbs to learn.
As the app is aimed at users looking to learn another language the user must be of a certain age due to the need to be quite fluent in their own language. This is because each of the flash cards, how the app teaches new words, requires the user to be able to read and understand their own language to be able to discern the word in English. As previously mentioned, users who Portuguese, German or Korean can access this app. Each flash card contains the English word, a picture to help explain the word and then the word in each of the other languages. Potentially this also allows a user to help learn the other languages too however the main app is for users of these languages to learn English specifically. If you are confident in doing so you can also add your own flash cards of words that do not already appear allowing you to personalise and adapt the learning.
The app has a free version with ads but also a subscription-based model with a couple of price points depending on the longevity of the subscription. The design is quite basic but there are some clever aspects such as being able to note your confidence of a card by clicking the thumbs up or down button. There are also different styles of play within the app, such as just going through the flash cards and marking your confidence levels or choosing from a few different daily challenges. Having multiple learning methods really adds to the overall learning within the app as it targets different types of users.
What we love about Verb Cards: English Verbs
There are a number of really good things about the app. The fact that the user is able to personalise their learning by adding new words is excellent and also that they are able to mark their confidence in the flash card by selecting a thumbs up or down option allows the learning to be adaptive to the user. The daily challenges also give users the ability to access the learning in different ways and a search feature allows the user, who may be stuck on expressing themselves the option to quickly search for the correct translation.
What skills does it improve?
Verb Cards: English Verbs aims to improve and widen the users range of vocabulary but also their understanding and mastery of the English language. The app is aimed at speakers of Korean, Portuguese and German to help them learn important and valuable verbs in English.
What age is it appropriate for?
VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS app I would suggest is aimed at users at the upper age range so around 14 plus. This is due to the fact that the user must already have a good vocab range from their own language before they would be able to access the app, otherwise they are going to get very little out of the learning. It is certainly be used for an adult looking to learn English from one of the languages available in the app.
Is VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS easy to use?
For the user the app is incredibly easy to use and access.
How will students benefit?
Students will benefit from being able to access an app that will build their range of vocabulary in the English language. It will allow them to learn in their own time, through techniques such as the Pomodoro method so they will be able to return to and retain as much learning as possible.
How will teachers benefit?
Teachers will benefit from students working their way through the app and widening their vocabulary and knowledge of the English language. If they are English teachers of Korean, German or Portuguese students then they will be able to set their students specific words to learn and also personalise the learning by adding specific words that may not already be in the app.
How will parents benefit?
There are many benefits for parents which are very similar to that of teachers. They will know that their child is taking a small amount of time a day (if used on a daily basis) to learn new words and to test themselves on these words in the English language.
What VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS can improve on?
For me the main thing I would suggest is the look of the app. I don’t think it gives the information in as successful way as possible. For instance the look of the text on the flash cards themselves is quite busy and does detract a little from the learning. In having all four languages it does mean there is a lot to take in. Maybe if the user selecting their home language and only this text appeared on the card it would mean that the learner could really focus on the learning.
How much does VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS cost?
VERB CARDS: ENGLISH VERBS is free to download and has a freemium version with ads. However it also has a range of subscription charges to allow access without ads too.
What is included with the free version vs. paid?
Free version had ads and the paid for doesn’t.
