About Tonara

The app Tonara is an audio-based app. It is aimed towards any learners of any musical instrument. It is very easy to understand how to progress through the app, and there are clear instructions given for the teacher, and a clear helpful chat in order to clarify any questions. This app is designed to give students the guidance in order to ensure their practice is completed in between lessons, with opportunity for reward, and guidance from the teacher.

Teacher Review

Toner provides the student with an interactive, fun and engaging way to improve their rehearsal and performance skills on any instrument. We all know the practice is the key to improvement in music. However, for children as much as adults, it can be very tough to get them to practice and rehearse as much as they should, and it can certainly be infuriating! This app is an ingenious way to engage people into practicing, and help the teachers to monitor this also. The design and graphics are attractive, and very clear and easy to use. It is animated and interesting to look at, with lots of areas of the app to discover. The variety of music to practice with is very wide and helps to show progress throughout, based on a variety of different musical skills. However, the teacher cannot see the ‘student view’ of the app, which would be helpful, in order to view and understand the app better. This would certainly help the teacher to be able to guide the student in the most effective way, through the app.

The pieces of music available through the app have a very wide variety and are very engaging for any learner. It is also incredibly helpful that studies and scales are available also, so that teachers can encourage students to work on the more dextrous work for a student. I like the use of a chat function, although I feel that for a child, the parent should be able to automatically view the chat also, in order to safeguard both the child and the parent, and to demonstrate good e-Safety practice. Once you select an assignment, you can then send this to the student and monitor their progress and practice. Students can send recordings back to you as a teacher, which is incredibly helpful in order to be able to see their progress throughout the week and throughout their practice. However with many teachers utilising Rock School or ABRSM to demonstrate achievement for the teacher, it would be very helpful if these pieces were readily available on the app. This would certainly help to improve the aural skills for the student, and encourage them to practice their exam pieces as well as other pieces. I really like the wide array of media to practice with, and I’m sure that this will help all students to engage. However, it would be really helpful if a brief tutorial could be run through for the first few times, so that it makes it easier for the teacher to navigate through the app and be able to use it for the detail that it is provided. I feel quite confident that the app is very suitable and usable for teachers and students. However, I feel that with further navigation, I would be able to utilise the app in much more detail and much more effectively.

One thing I really love about the new update to this app, is the way that it can automatically give immediate feedback to a student when you choose media direct from the app. This saves the teacher a lot of time as the student can have immediate feedback, and makes this much easier for both the student and the teacher. However again, it would be helpful for the teacher to be able to view this engagement also, so that they could identify and support the child with the use of the app. It may be that this is a possibility, but this is unclear in the app at the moment.

Tonara provides a great opportunity for students to listen and read music and be able to respond to this. It’s also a great interactive way of encouraging students to reflect upon their own practice, and find ways to improve upon their own learning. A key factor in students learning well is for them to be able to self-regulate their own learning, to reflect upon this, and be able to understand what they need to be able to do to become independent learners. Tonara provides this ideology within the app, in order for students to then be able to self-regulate their own learning in the future, and therefore become successful in their achievement.
