Toca Nature Review

What is Toca Nature?

Toca Nature is a simulation game where kids shape land into mountains, forests, and rivers to create habitats for creatures such as bears, rabbits, foxes, and more. After creating a world, kids zoom in and gather plants and fish to feed the animals, and then zoom back out to keep shaping their world.

Toca Nature gives kids the chance to experience the mountains, lakes, and forests on a different level. Kids don’t just get to walk through the forest, they get to build it, placing trees, mountains, and lakes in their virtual world, and then zooming in to experience the creatures that live within. With this app, kids will get to experience nature in ways that they can’t in real life.

Features Toca Nature; What we like about it

What we love about Toca Nature is how it uses your device to bring nature to you. Whether you're in the car or in your living room, you can feel the soothing sensation of a walk in the woods, listening to birds whistle while you watch a deer graze for food as leaves gently fall around you. With the mystical music and lighting, and surreal graphics, it's easy to feel like Toca Nature is a portal to a magical, Narnia-like land.

From the woodpecker tapping away at the word “Nature” in the opening screen to the wind blowing as part of the opening music, the app really captures the experience of walking in the woods.

You feel almost like a woodland fairy, invisibly sharing food with the animals. It's neat to see how the animals act and react, growing visibly after you feed them. Kids can learn a little bit about what different animals eat from the game. We're glad for kids to have this positive, natural playground, and we hope it inspires families to go outside and seek out natural beauty.

How Toca Nature works?

Kids start out in creation mode, where they see a topographic tile of land and a palette of natural features: mountains, water, and five different types of trees. Tap on the mountain tool, then drag and hold to watch the earth rise, maybe even high enough to gather snow on top! Each of the features is associated with a different animal; when you add enough of that feature to create a habitat, the animal will appear.

Spin the globe for a different point of view, or tap the magnifying glass to zoom in and walk around your landscape. Once you've touched down, it's time to explore! Watch the animals doze or swim in the water. Tap an animal to see how it reacts to your presence. See if the animals are searching for a particular type of food. Share the food from your pouch, and collect more as you walk.

As the world darkens and lightens, how do the animals respond? Then, the next time you open the game, start again by creating a whole new world!

What skills will children develop?

Toca Nature allows for children to build and develop habitats. They can choose to plant trees or create an ocean for the animals that live in the habitats. Once they build the habitat they are able to then meet the needs of the animals by foraging food for the animals.

Toca Nature app allows children to establish a connection with nature. This gives kids a direct cause and effect relationship with how much land resources they have versus the water for the animals in the habitats. It can also open family discussions about the impact of global warming and deforestation on animal habitats. Toca Nature does not require wifi for play, which makes it a great choice for air travel and world schooling families.

Final Thoughts

Toca Nature is best for kids who enjoy creating and exploring and don't mind somewhat cubist graphics. It's an engaging way to introduce artistic kids to science: imagine the land as your canvas and the trees as your paintbrush and see what you can create! Then go closer to see how your creations act, react, and interact together!
