In this game, the child make their own decisions about what tools to use or how they want each character’s hair to look like. Throughout this process, they even start to develop some style preferences. Even begin to learn the use of colour, motion, hair length, and the many fashion accessories they can use on the characters head.

I think it’s an important quality of an early learning app, to not provide kids with too much guidance as this forces them to interact with the app and encourages problem solving skills. That is definitely a strong point of this app.

How Toca Hair Salon works?

When you click on a characters’ picture, you are taken to a Hair Salon, where your character is patiently waiting for you to get to work.

On the table in front of you, there are scissors, a comb, a razor and some hair grow. How to use the given tools is not immediately evident  but, after a few clicks, you realise you can cut, shape and grow your characters’ hair, anyway you see fit. The visual style is similar to that of a Pixar cartoon with nice extra touches, such as cars moving in the window of the hair salon.

If you scroll the tables in front of your character you find you have even more options for hair styling. There is hair dye, a straightener and curler, shampoo, hats, sunglasses, ribbons and a host of other options for you to give your character any style you want. The game play is pleasing, the hair movement is really quite detailed and it takes some time to get the exact look you’re after. The characters also react to the styles you give them with grimaces when you break out the razor and smiles if you try something funky.

What skills will children develop?

Children will play with this app for hours. It teaches sequencing, fine motor skills, the professions in the adult world and engages them into  a role-playing game that   will get their imaginations fired up. Overall, this app is very kid-friendly and easy for them to use. There are a ton of creative routes your child is able to take within this game and they may not even get sick of playing around with it!
