Storybird Review

What is Storybird?

Storybird is a digital platform that allows students to tell stories using words and images. Storybird offers a community for storytelling and a well-designed interface for matching words to compelling pictures.

Storybird is a popular website to create books on their own or work in teams.

How does Storybird work?

Storybird combines creative tools for writing, reading, and storytelling in educational settings. Students can make their own story. It makes students of all ages feel like “real authors” and bring their fantasy to life.

Users can begin by browsing through a gallery of professional artwork until they find an inspiring image.  When they find an image that interests them, they write a story or poem to accompany their chosen visual. Students can choose from a collection of images and build a picture book around them. Storybird also offers excellent resources for teachers, like writing lessons and private class settings.

How much does Storybird cost?

Storybird is free to read, once you sign-up for an account. The paid membership is charged at $8.99 per month or $59.88 per year, or there are school and district plan options.

Is Storybird free?

Storybird has a 7-day free trial, but after that most features -- outside of reading stories -- require a paid account both for teachers and students. Teachers can also set up a paid classroom account that supports a number of students based on how much they pay.

What are the best Storybird features?

With Storybird, you can sell digital or print books and poems made by your students. Or even better: activate the optional fundraiser mode to involve families and raise money for your school.

The provided guides are really useful for teaching or having students work at home. From guides on how to write a prompt, to writing a killer hook, there are lots of ways to work directly on creative writing improvement.

Is it Good for Learning?

Storybird offers a community for storytelling and a well-designed interface for matching words to compelling pictures. It can inspire student writing, but not all students will be inspired by the site on its own. Since students and teachers can also read published stories and comment on them, it offers good opportunities to practice digital citizenship.  I can see a project coming.

Why Kids love Storybird

Storybird’s tools give kids the opportunity to write comics, short stories, chapter books, and more. Choose from existing illustrations and add your own text to create unique masterpieces. The professional artwork is wide-ranging, and writing challenges help kids expand their skills and push their creativity to new heights.
