About SpellNow Level 6 AU

A game based app that helps users improve their spelling abilities

Teacher Review

Each app is different in that they are aimed at increasingly older students as you move through them and the appearance of the app changes its background theme too. For instance lvl5 is based under water and lvl3 has more historic, Roman feel to it. The content isn’t affected by this but it does help to give each level a distinctive feature. A user does not have to use the lower levelled apps to be able to access this app. Each of the apps follow the same design and set up so if a student were to use each of the apps in a progressive way then they would certainly be familiar with accessing the content and how to go about using the app to the best of its ability. That being said the usability of app is extremely simple to engage with so you certainly wouldn’t need prior knowledge of the app to use it well. One comment I would make though is that the look and usability is the same in this app (aimed at older children) as it is in the other apps (aimed at younger children). I’m therefore not necessarily sure an older student coming to this style and design would engage in it as much bearing in mind how geared towards younger users the other apps are.
The app is very simple to use so a user can come with no prior knowledge of previous apps and ‘dive’ straight into the gameplay and content. On the front page the user has a couple of different options. These include the main content of the app which can be accessed via the ‘My Journey’ option, the ‘Open Road’ option or the ‘Trial’ option. The trial gives the user a restricted amount of content and flavour for what the main content of the app is. Although the app is free to download a user can take out a subscription, available from the developer’s website, which gives them access to both the ‘My Journey’ and ‘Open Road’ options. Even with this paid addition the app is still good value for money, especially considering the amount of content that within the app. However, even the free trial side of the app offers a good amount of content that a user could easily learn from.
If a user does have a subscription then they can access the entirety of the app which includes both the ‘My Journey’ and ‘Open Road’ options. Although both contain the same content they are organised in a different ways. For instance the ‘Open Road’ option allows the user to access the content through selecting from the four terms available and then choosing one of the ten lessons within that term. Each of lessons can be worked through in order or chosen due to the type of words that appear in them. Each of the ten lessons are different and cover words such as long to short vowels, ie ei words and multisyllabic words. The last lesson is a revision one encompassing something from each of the previous lessons. All this, along with the specific words that appear in that lesson can be quickly found so the user can tailor their learning depending on their need. Before you select each of the lessons you can also see your progress through the medals that are awarded for competence as you move through them. This is really good in that it helps to encourage the user to better their score each time they access the app but also to keep a track on their progress and highlight any areas for development.
Where the ‘Open Road’ section allows the user to pick and choose where they wish to go and what they wish to access the ‘My Journey’ option targets the specific areas that need to be developed. As the user progresses the app intuitively picks up what areas need to be revisited and improved upon. This is a great addition from the users’ perspective as it allows them to make progress as they move through the app in a fluid way. Having different ways of accessing the content on the app means that it can be used both in an educational setting as well as for home use with a parent or carer.
Overall, this is a really good app that helps users to improve their abilities in their spelling as well as their comprehension of the words. With the game based element it adds a competitive nature which not only engages the user but will keep them returning to the app to improve their scores.
