About Scrivener

A simple, versatile, and refined word processor, Scrivener 2 will make an indelible mark on your writing process. Excellent tools for organizing writing. Ample collection of templates. Competitive price. Multiple installs allowed. Also available for Windows and iOS. Scrivener provides a place to create, edit, and organize all your work, especially long-form pieces.
What strikes me about Scrivener is how much more it looks like typical office software than other writing apps do. Menus, buttons, view modes, formatting tools, statistics, annotations, labels, keywords, uploads, and so forth.
Scrivener is one of the best apps for writers because it was built to give them the tools they need to draft ideas, compose words, edit, organize, and output their works. It's inexpensive, and the fact that you can install it on multiple machines adds value because you can work on your writing from any computer or iOS device with the app.

Teacher Review

What Is Scrivener?

Scrivener provides an online space for composing written works. Users can start with a blank document or a template. Templates are organized into categories like fiction, nonfiction, poetry, song lyrics and scripts. Many of these options are formatted for what the program describes as standard submission format. Some specific examples include radio scene script, comic book script, novel, persuasive lecture and MLA-style paper. If you choose to use a template, the document opens with an explanation of the template and how to use it.

The word processing screen provides several options for display control, including a full screen mode. Users can control text and some basic formatting, but the developers describe the program as being better suited for first drafts in most cases. Documents from Scrivener can be exported to another word processing program for further editing.

Scrivener can be purchased for $45 (local taxes may apply). The program is available for a 15% education discount. You can download a free trial that lasts for 30 days.

What does a Scrivener do?

Scrivener is cleanly designed and easy to use. The help section is thorough and features a user's manual in addition to interactive and video tutorials. The interactive tutorial is saved to your hard drive so you can edit and reference it in the future. I also like that the software was developed by a small company that seems committed to advancing Scrivener's good reputation. The company is open to user suggestions and willing to improve the program based on feedback.

The program's versatility is another plus. The variety of templates could make this program useful in writing classrooms. This variety of formats was not common among the tools that I looked at for this series. Templates that are designed for submission could help less experienced writers come up with a manuscript that is better suited for publishing consideration.

Scrivener drawbacks

Scrivener is only available for users that run a Mac operating system. This is its major limitation. Some users who are writing in a single format may prefer to use a program that is specialized, rather than one like Scrivener that offers a wide range of templates.

Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.

Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea.

Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a tap away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand. Write a description based on a photograph. Reference a video or PDF. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter. On the iPad, open two documents side-by-side; on the iPhone, flip between research and writing with just two taps.

Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, simply compile everything into a single document for printing, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.
