About Screen Time Limit KidCrono

Screen Time Limit KidCrono is a unique application that controls screen time for children and is suitable for all ages of children who use mobile devices on a regular basis. This application helps parents to manage their children’s screen time by rewarding them for respecting their playtime in front of iPad, iPhone or iPod devices. This app is free from in-app purchases and in-app adverts.

Teacher Review

Upon opening the application, the user is greeted with an instant home screen that displays a timer, child avatar, rewards and stopwatch. There is a ‘Timer’ menu and a ‘Settings’ menu at the bottom of the display. The developers could consider the use of a splash screen or home page here so to ease the user in. The application can be quite daunting at first glance until the user has familiarised themselves with the app or watched the online web tutorials. The developers could consider an internal link to the video tutorial earlier on. Once the user has watched the tutorial the application is fairly straight forward.

The ‘Settings’ feature will prompt a PIN to start the application. Once this has been set and re-entered there is an option to view a tutorial this includes:

Playtime – We love the fact the app recommends the amount of screen time based on age and playing behaviour.

Control – This button allows you to stop and start the timer. We were unsure whether the user had to go into the app to start the timer or whether the timer started as soon as they opened the mobile device. If the user has to start the timer this may be something that the child could skip.

Awards – Children are awarded for stopping on time. These can be exchanged for personal avatars. The reward system is an excellent idea, however, is this a strong enough incentive for children to stop playing?

Multi-users – One of the great features of this application is that you can create multiple user profiles. This is a really worthwhile feature for siblings and classroom students.

Once the text tutorial has been viewed the user has the chance to set up the notifications within the application. Settings are recommended to get the most out of the application.

Within the ‘Settings’ the user can create a child profile. This includes some excellent features such as: Name, age, gender, reminders, play control time, safety tips, a video tutorial and the ability to set a child’s screen time schedule over a weekly basis. We love the weekly schedule where changers can be made to week days and weekends. The age setting will recommend the amount of screen time for that child. We did think that some of these recommendations were rather high still and fact that the child has to enter the application to start the timer is a feature that may be flawed as whether the user or parent will remember to do this even after notifications. The timer does rely on the child being disciplined enough to stop their screen time.

The child’s profile has a number of algorithms to help the user with their screen time including the ‘Addiction’ level which influences how the app rewards the child for playing wisely. The avatars are great fun and there should be one for everyone. Children can buy further avatars by trading in their rewards. This is a fun incentive that some of our users really enjoyed.

This application does not have academic educational value but could be an essential tool for parents who are worried about their child’s screen time. The use of mobile devices for children truly enhanced their learning experiences but too much screen time can have a detrimental effect. The application is beautifully presented and user friendly, however, we did think that the application was over thought and menu orientated. We appreciate that creating a screen timer application requires some technical settings within the device and with a vast number of screen time applications on the market this is probably one of the best.

The application Screen Time Limit KidCrono is a good application and with a few minor tweaks could be an excellent application. The developers are committed to bring additional usability improvements in the next release. This app comes recommended by the
