Read with Ello Review

Ello teaches kids how to improve their reading with interactive books and a fun, attention-capturing platform. Ello is an app that pairs with grade-level books and is easy to start. It uses speech recognition technology to listen to your child read and offers prompting to help them phonetically sound out words when they get stuck.

The app also offers a monthly box of appropriate books tailored to the child's reading level and interests, along with a physical reward for their hard work. Ello is compatible with iPads running iOS 15 and newer, as well as other tablets such as Android and Fire devices. Currently, Ello does not work on laptops, desktop computers or phones.

Read with Ello Features

  • Proven, phonics-based reading strategies

Cost

Ello is an ad-free subscription-based platform that is currently offering two options. They offer a 7-day trial period and will send a reminder before the trial period is up, which I thought was a nice little feature.

  • Ello with E-books (Digital): 7-day free trial, then $9.99/month
  • Ello with paperbacks (Physical): $39.99/month, and you get to keep the books
  • Ello with paperbacks comes with everything available in the digital version, plus 5 classic paperback books, activities, prizes & more.

You can choose from a $9.99 per month subscription, which doesn't include a monthly shipment of 5 books, but your child can still read along using the app. The other subscription choice is priced at $39.99 per month and includes a monthly shipment of 5 books based on your child's reading needs and interests.

Both subscription options are an excellent value and include reading coaching, which is truly the most valuable part of building literacy.

Is it good for learning?

Ello is appropriate for young readers and learners with special needs. Ello works well through the end of 2nd grade for a child reading at grade level, and longer if they are behind. It is designed for children who are 4–8 years of age, but it depends on the child. At the younger end, if they can read the sentence "I am a cat", then Ello will work for them.

Ello is not a curriculum but would make a wonderful supplement to any early literacy program. Ello teaches readers how to decode words and develop fluency by listening to your child read out loud and then coaches them just like a personal reading tutor would. By using evidence-based strategies to help your child when they get stuck while reading, Ello minimizes frustration in readers.

One of my favorite features is that kids can earn monthly tangible rewards, motivating them to keep reading while using a growth mindset. Ello not only matches books to your child's reading level, but to their interests, helping them develop a love of reading.

Ello uses proven, phonics-based reading strategies to help children decode words and develop fluency, making learning to read an engaging and rewarding experience. By using elements of behavioral psychology, Ello keeps kids motivated to keep reading and removes the intimidation factor when kids attempt new books. This is one of those apps that I wish was available when my son was a young, struggling reader.

The Pros of using Read with Ello

  • Listens, supports and corrects like a personal reading tutor
  • Corrects mispronunciations by immediately prompting the reader to phonetically sound out the word by breaking up a tricky word into syllables
  • Matches up young readers with developmentally appropriate books
  • Monitors kids' progress
  • Phyiscal or digital-only packages help parents match budgets and requirements
  • Kids can earn monthly tangible rewards

Benefits for Students

Students will benefit from Ello app from the personalized reading coaching that is built into each book. It keeps the momentum going while your child reads each story by prompting them to sound out words phonetically and then get back to the story to put the new word into context.

Benefits for Teachers

Teachers will find this a fantastic reading supplement that students enjoy and perhaps would even prefer to use when reading new books. It offers a great deal of support to build fluency and prosody. In my own classroom, I will often implement reading tools that students enjoy using to further foster a lifelong love of reading, and Ello would be a strong competitor in class when compared to other options.

Benefits for Parents

Parents can benefit from the Ello app by knowing that their child is receiving individualized reading tutor, that monitors their reading level in real-time. Ello can be used while parents support their child's reading or as a supplement to encourage them to do more independent reading.

Final Verdict: Read with Ello Review

My overall rating of this app 5 stars, if you are a parent. I would love to rate it 5 stars for everyone, however, it's current limited capacity for multiple users has me in anticipation for a more classroom-friendly offering!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Read with Ello safe?

Ello seems to put children's privacy first by only collecting data of a child's progress to provide the service, such as rewards. However, data collection is optional, and parents can choose to allow or not allow it. Ello offers a detailed privacy policy outlining its data collection practices and is ad free. Ello declares itself to be COPPA complaint, but this was not scrutinized in my review.
