Teacher Overview

Qlango is a language learning app that enables you to learn your chosen foreign language from scratch or as a revision tool, making use of a compelling range of activities. It makes use of an impressive variety of European language pairs, in multiple combinations.

Teacher Review

Qlango boasts a truly comprehensive selection of language pairs and unceremoniously hits the ground running with its language-learning content.  The concept behind the app sees the user at once immersed in the target language and tackling the various activities, to see themselves climb the community league table or to earn some much coveted ‘peanuts’.

The software is a good-sized app, which requires constant Internet connectivity if it is to function and the subsequent creation of a username for progress-tracking purposes once it has been installed. From the start-up screen, the user can choose his/her language pairs for study and then will embark on their language-learning adventure.  It begins with the option of studying isolated words – recommended for novice learners – or individual words placed in the context of sentences – more suited if you want a challenge.  From here, the user will aim to progress through the various ‘stages’ – 1 to 7 – completing a election of lessons in order to do so.  The initial three stages are open to the user, but to progress beyond this they will have to unlock the remainder by completing all preceding challenges.  The range of activity / question-style is definitely notable within Qlango, and it will keep any user suitably engaged and stretched.  From multiple-choice questions and translating written and dictated texts to unscrambling phrases, the user can work their way through the levels, earn ‘peanuts’ with each success – more peanuts are awarded for the more challenging activities – and track their progress thanks to the league table or the personal achievement summaries that are available for review.  This progression is insured, as once a lesson has been completed it will be locked for 24 hours, unless the user is willing to pay a small “fee” – quite literally ‘peanuts’ to unlock this earlier.

From an educator’s perspective, one potential drawback would be the lack of initial instruction within the various topics areas.  Users are not taught the relevant language, merely shown a glimpse of it on the lesson start page and then tasked with the various language-manipulation challenges.  However, I do use the phrase “potential drawback”, as this style of immersive learning has been proven to be efficient.  Yet, beginner or basic linguists may potentially find the more complex exercises too challenging initially, especially if they have a limited knowledge of syntax.  In addition, the specificity of the phrases being used, i.e. the translations must exactly match up, has the potential to frustrate the more independent user.  However, the developer has considered this and given the user three stage hints to allow you to get to the desired answers; again, users of more-limited language knowledge will possibly find this frustrating.  That being said, persistence and striving to learn from mistakes will see most users progressing quickly, grasping linguistic structures with increasing confidence, and seeing them applied in a variety of contexts.  Yet, true appreciation of how the chosen language works will require other resources alongside this app.

Beyond the linguistic specifics, Qlango also offers the semblance of being a language-learning community.  Users can set themselves a weekly target in the amount of lessons that they complete and compare this to other app users from around the world thanks to the in-app ‘Wall of Fame’ or indeed share their successes on Facebook.  On a more personal level, each successfully completed lesson sees the user gain ‘peanuts’ which can be subsequently used for rewards in the “Raffle” section of the app menu or to unlock very recently studied content.

In conclusion, as a stand-alone app for language learning, it does represent a challenging piece of language-learning software, with a scope for independent customisation by the user.  The potential for exploration is something that will come, primarily, through persistent use – those hoping for a quick-fix approach will leave somewhat unfulfilled.  The lack of passive instruction to introduce each topic may not appeal to everyone, but the immersive intent is an interesting approach.  With this in mind, Qlango will be better suited to an older user who can exhibit the necessary self-management and self-motivation skills needed to persist towards genuine success.  Although unlocking the full functionality of the app may be a rather expensive pursuit, the regular updates and continued revising of the app capabilities – due to this still being the beta version - make this a promising piece of software for those seeking to stretch their linguistic capabilities.  I know that I will continue to use this app and will be recommending it to colleagues and students alike.
