Oomph is an educational Physics app that supports the user’s understanding and application of key concepts associated with Electricity topics. Oomph focuses on enabling individuals to correctly define the electrical quantities; current, voltage and resistance. Use of Oomph will avoid embedding misconceptions and misinterpretation of notoriously confused terms, minimising the chance of carrying errors forward in later learning. The app is easy to follow, with the descriptions and explanations of these concepts broken down into stages that supports every ability of learner. The app revisits and reiterates key information in a consistent format, promoting recall skills and enabling the user to build their confidence with these concepts. Progress checks throughout the app scaffolds the learning before adding further detail and difficulty. Students can jump to topic areas they are less confident on, giving them a bespoke experience that can be personalised to their ability level.

Within some of the information pages, there are simulations to further demonstrate the applications of these words, making the app suitable for a variety of learning styles. Users are guided to complete small tasks promoting self-direction, which is an important skill to master and can further support success with independent revision or learning. The app covers extensive information surrounding electrical circuits and Ohms law and is therefore beneficial to many levels of education. This app will develop a variety of skills including literacy, numeracy, self-direction and critical thinking.

What we love about Oomph: 

Oomph is an app that focuses on a user’s understanding of electrical quantities, circuit diagrams and applications of Ohm’s law. This app can be used as an alternative to the arduous task of locating key idea’s from extensively written textbooks to gain clear understanding of notoriously misunderstood concepts, more specifically the workings of electrical circuits, including confidently defining the terms voltage, current and resistance and identifying how these interleave and effect each other when changed. The app supports users in manipulating the equation for Ohms law making each variable the unknown. Oomph is incredibly easy to use, is clear and concise in its explanations and encourages a user to check their confidence levels independently. Oomph can be a bridge between a user’s current understanding and their ability to complete tasks outside of the app – for example preparation for a test or completing a homework task.

The app shortens explanations into bite size chunks that fit on a smart screen, encouraging users to move on when they have understood the core idea. Extra information is also available for users who require a more in-depth explanation. Interactive tasks and simulations further support the written descriptions allowing visual learners to manipulate the conditions of circuits and see how these effect the voltage, resistance or current. This app allows users to fine tune their understanding of electrical quantities, applying different conditions to circuits and see their effects and then moves on to demonstrating how to manipulate and rearrange important equations. The app can be used as an alternative to a textbook as a more convenient way to learn, revise and consolidate understanding.

Oomph is suitable for students in the age range of 11-16, with a clear curriculum link to GCSE Physics. Oomph could be used beyond this age group for consolidating previous learning before moving onto more challenging concepts.

Oomph is incredibly easy to use and intuitive, simply swipe through each page to move on and progress. Further to this there is a drop-down menu for you to ‘jump’ to a specific section of the topic should you wish to. Use of colour coded key words and repetition of key terminology and narratives promotes a consistency between information pages and encourages a user’s ability to utilise their recall skills more easily. Extra information is also available for users who require a more in-depth explanation. Summary pages are interspersed throughout the app to promote recall and encourage consolidation of previous ideas.

How will students benefit:

Oomph can support students in understanding difficult concepts by breaking down confusing theories into easy to manage text and visual examples. Oomph initially teaches users the content behind the key words; current, voltage and resistance and slowly builds upon these preliminary descriptions to construct a more detailed picture. This will be incredible as a revision tool as concepts are broken down into manageable chunks and revisited as users progress through the app.

Students can jump to the section of the topic they need to learn, revise or recap making the app suitable for a wide range of ages and educational settings. Progress checks encourage students to independently assess their confidence and understanding, promoting improvement in the skill of self-direction. The app remembers where you left off and so students can use it as a suitable revision tool, scheduling breaks in their learning, as researched to be most effective, without needing to spend time re-finding their place.

Use of the app is an interactive way to engage students in a sometimes difficult to visualise topic and one which is usually textbook driven. Teachers can utilise the circuit examples to visually demonstrate how changing each variable effects the others and demonstrates that you can alter a circuit’s conditions. Use of the app will remove the need for multiple sets of circuit equipment but still allow teachers to successfully demonstrate an experiment with their desired change in the variables. The ability to successfully complete an experiment without the need for physical practical lightens staff workload as the need for risk assessments and equipment ordering and testing.

How will parents benefit:

Parents can benefit as the app is so user friendly in its explanations, even those who are not currently learning this content or those not in educational settings can understand the idea’s and support their child in learning together. This supports collaborative learning amongst families and so will encourage student completion.

Oomph can improve on: Oomph could add more content beyond the Electricity topic, irrespective of the history behind its development. This is a great story for how the app came to be, but more Physics concepts could be added to build its scope. Beyond this Oomph would benefit in adding in app tasks that give users immediate feedback to show progress and understanding. Currently it relies on a user believing they understand a concept before moving on.

Overall rating of the app:

The app is deserving of four stars, it is relevant to all Science curriculums between KS3 and KS4 and could also be useful beyond this level. It has the ability to be extended further by addition of more concepts and the introduction of in app tasks with instant feedback.
