What is One Lettered Quiz app?

One Lettered Quiz app is an app aimed towards young children to help their understanding and use of the English language, especially in terms of spelling. Due to the learning in the app it does mean it can be used by anyone who is starting to learn the English language. It is a game based app that has the user select the correct letters that are moving across the bottom of the screen to be able to correctly spell the words at the top of the screen that have certain letters missing.

What we love about One Lettered Quiz

The One Lettered Quiz app has a number of really good features that make it a fun app for young children to use both in an educational and home setting. I thought initially I wasn’t going to enjoy playing the app as the premise seemed too simple however, with the addition of the letters moving, sometimes quite quickly at the bottom of the screen in amongst other letters, I actually found myself struggling to complete the levels in the beginning. This was mainly because I wasn’t concentrating enough and giving the app the attention it deserved however, when I started to play properly I found the app had enough challenge to make it educational but also enjoyable.

What skills does it improve?

One Lettered Quiz app app is first and foremost a language learning app. Through using it, children are able to develop and further their understanding and use of the English language and in particular the spelling of certain words.

However, with the addition of the letters moving across the screen the user also has to develop their dexterity and concentration on the game, making sure they select the correct letter as it moves across the screen, points are deducted if you select the wrong letter!

What age is it appropriate for?

One Lettered Quiz app is rated for children between 3 and 11 depending on their language abilities. Some of the words are quite easy however the challenge in the game may appeal to some children on the older end of this scale or may be useful for them if they are at the weaker end.

Is One Lettered Quiz easy to use?

The apps design isn’t the best that I have seen and having been created by a team who speaks English as an additional language means that there are some grammatical errors in the apps explanation meaning that it’s not always entirely clear. However, users are still able to work out how to use the app and once they have used it once it is very self-explanatory. The more difficult parts are when you try to customise the learning by adding your own word lists, an excellent idea and addition but might be quite fiddly for some users.

How will students benefit?

Children will enjoy the experience of playing the game in the app and working their way through the levels whilst also challenging themselves to keep improving upon their scores in each of the levels. Children will get a really good grounding and understanding of the spelling of certain words and the challenge of trying to work out the word they need to spell, find the right letter, and successfully select them, all whilst trying to beat the clock!

How will teachers benefit?

Teachers can make use of children using this app at home with the parents and setting them certain words dependant on what it is they want them to learn.

How will parents benefit?

Parents, especially if they interact with their child during the app have a lot to benefit from it. The app allows parents to see how well their child is doing in the app from the scores they are receiving and their proficiency and also to add their own words to the game to make sure the learning is as personalised as possible. This may also be in collaboration with their child’s school.

What One Lettered Quiz can improve on?

One Lettered Quiz app has a couple of main areas that I think of it improved upon could make this a five star app. Firstly I think the graphics need to be updated a little to make sure that children will be interested in wanting to play the app. The content is excellent however, there are a number of other apps on the market whose design would certainly entice them over this app. I would also suggest a little tidying up of the grammar used in the app to make sure that it is entirely accurate for English speaking users.
