Omoguru: Dyslexia Friendly Reader

Omoguru Reader is a reading tool for dyslexics that improves reading skills in an enjoyable way. For people with dyslexia, the ability to read and understand text can be affected by the way in which text has been written and produced. Omoguru improves readability and better visual impact for all readers, but especially those with dyslexia. The main premise of Omoguru is that it changes the appearance of text and background to support the dyslexic reader. This app is fantastic and easy to use allowing you to find the most appropriate appearance that suits the individual user. Importantly, Omoguru offers a serious amount of feature change options as each person with dyslexia are affected in different ways. Different colours for both text and background are available in addition to a zoom facility. The app allows you to increase spacing between words to what is suitable for you and the ability to change size for those common reversal letters is fantastic.

The app contains preloaded free e-books in English but you can download your own books and documents. Doing this is simple and fast, once you have downloaded your book or document it will appear in the library. When opened, the text will appear in the settings that you have applied. Omoguru is a great tool for students to have on hand in the classroom as a student can download notes and text straight to the app to read.

We trialled the app with 2 primary and 4 secondary aged students at our school. All children have been diagnosed with dyslexia in addition to autism. How each child is affected by dyslexia significantly differs and each has significant challenges over the years. We chose the settings on the basis of which features the child was comfortable with. We chose their favourite stories to read and downloaded them to the app. Each child reported that it helped them to read and all gave the Omoguru a thumbs up. The children continued to use the app for various tasks during the trial and teachers gave overwhelmingly positive feedback. One teacher suggested adding the schools shared reading scheme to the app if possible. Our Educational Psychologist and assistant also felt Omoguru was a well-developed application that we should use to support our students.   

Omoguru is a truly wonderful application. Its ease of use and great features ensure that reading becomes an enjoyable experience for the user. The developers have created an assistive tool that will open doors for people with dyslexia and help them to overcome challenge and frustration. Well done!!
