About Number Pieces Basic, by the Math Learning Center

Number Pieces Basic is a simplified version for use with primary students. It has fewer features, putting greater focus on place value, counting, addition, and subtraction. With Number Pieces, students can represent larger numbers and multiplication and division concepts.

Teacher Review

As with many topics, using a visual representation of numbers can help children build mental links between the digits they see in a number and what they represent. Physical teaching aids like number blocks have long been used for this but you can use digital versions to just as good an effect.

Number Pieces is a completely free app that can work on all devices either on the web or through an app. Using it you can manipulate graphics that represent 100, 10, and 1. Use this to work with your child on partitioning numbers and showing them in this visual way.

From here, build up to comparing numbers. Two numbers can be shown visually and this should make it clear why, for example, the number 431 is greater than 99 even though none of its individual digits are greater.

Number Pieces app is very simple to use. You can experiment with the icons and you should find it easy to add and manipulate the on-screen elements.

Description

Number Pieces Basic helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students can use the number pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, count, regroup, add, and subtract. The drawing tools allow students to label representations and show their understanding.

Note: Number Pieces, an advanced version of Number Pieces Basic, is also available in the App Store. Number Pieces has additional features for representing larger numbers and multiplication and division concepts.
