Mathway

Mathway helps students to learn by providing solutions to maths problems.  Used appropriately, Mathway will ensure that students can get on with their practice and further their learning while being confident that they have understood the maths.

Students can learn how to solve a huge variety of maths problems using Mathway. It teaches, not by setting problems but by solving ones that a student encounters in their work, such as in a textbook or on a worksheet. It covers a wide variety of maths topics including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.

There is something almost magical about using Mathway. You can type in a maths problem but you can also just take a photograph of it.  Once the photo has been cropped to cover only the problem in question, the app gets to work and shows students the answer. Another option is to say the problem to the app and it will turn your words into an on-screen problem.  If you choose to type in the problem, the app uses a very comprehensive keyboard that has all of the maths symbols you might need.

The app is very effective at recognising the problem however it is set. It is no less able when it comes to solving the problem and does so accurately and quickly. If you find Microsoft Math useful, try other math solver apps today. 

Free vs. Paid

The basic Mathway app, which lets you solve problems using its virtual calculators, is free. If you want to see the steps that go into solving the problems, you have to pay. Upgrading to the paid version costs either a $9.99 monthly subscription or $39.99 per year.

Mathway is great for confirming that students have reached the correct answer. In most cases, students with a list of maths problems to solve for homework have no way of checking them until the next day.  If they have a fundamental misunderstanding they will have put in a disheartening amount of effort to achieve a series of wrong answers. If they had this app, they could check that they have got the first one correct and proceed knowing that they understand the process.

Should that first answer be incorrect, students can check back on their notes or use the app to look at the correct methods and improve their learning.  The route to the answer can be illustrated by the app but these mostly require a subscription to activate them. Doing so extends its educational usefulness.

Students will have to be disciplined with this app as it could also be very effective at cheating on homework. Of course, taking this route would deny students the chance of learning the topic set for them but temptation can be hard to ignore. With the option to show the different steps active, it would be impossible for a teacher to detect the assistance of an app in helping a student to complete their homework. 

Students need to be trusted, however. There have always been ways for them to hide a lack of effort or understanding.  It would be a shame to deny students the benefits that Mathway could bring them but they should be shown how it is best used to help them learn rather than as a shortcut to a correct answer.
