Teacher Overview

Math Bingo app has been played by many children to practise division, multiplication, addition and subtraction and, no doubt, Math Bingo and its bingo bugs will maintain its popularity into the future.

Teacher Review

ABCya.com first produced Math Bingo back in 2011 and it has been popular and well used since then.  Its updates have ensured that Math Bingo still looks good on modern devices and it provides a fun way to practise math.

There are two types of bingo bugs in ABCya Math Bingo, unintentional and intentional.  The first type is a minor glitch that can be worked around but is annoying.  When setting up a Maths Bingo game, you must use the enter key after entering a name rather than hiding the keyboard and continuing or else the app name entry box will never go away whatever screen you are on.

The other bingo bugs are much more welcome and form a key part of the maths bingo game.  The player of this maths game needs to get five bingo bugs in a row.  He or she does this by answering arithmetic questions.

There are some options in Math Bingo to tailor the questions to a player's needs.  The options include addition bingo, subtraction bingo, multiplication bingo, division bingo, or a mix of them all.  Next, a choice of easy, medium or hard can be applied.

When the math bingo game begins, players answer a series of arithmetic questions by tapping on the board of numbers. A bingo bug covers the chosen number if it is the correct answer to the question.  The first few wrong answers do not receive a bingo bug, just the sound of a buzzer. Too many wrong answers have the result of the player being dumped out of the current game with a reminder that the purpose of Math Bingo is to practise math facts.  This does feel a little abrupt and perhaps it could have been improved with the offering of a tip or hint that could help children's thinking processes.

The app tracks the time in which a player gets a line of bingo bugs.  This time reflects the players arithmetic speed and accuracy but also a little luck as this is maths bingo so there is no control over when the numbers you need are called.  Good scores are rewarded with a bingo bug for the player's collection.  They can bounce and shake these bingo bugs in their collection screen.

Maths Bingo allows multiple players to use it - each under their own name.  Each player's name is put on to the high-score table if they achieve a worthy result and this, no doubt leads to its popularity with children as they get to compete to defeat their classmates.

As well as Math Bingo, there are three additional mini-games that are fun.  One is just for entertainment but the others use arithmetic to enable interactions with the ever-present math bingo bugs.  None could stand alone as an app but as an addition to Math Bingo itself, they provide variety and extra value.

With its bright colours and jolly music (irritatingly repetitive to adult ears but quite acceptable to children, apparently), ABCya's Math Bingo has been an app that has made math practice more enjoyable for many children.  It remains a fun app that still fulfils its purpose without using advertisements or in-app purchases.

Scoring

The score in Math Bingo is determined by the time to complete a game plus a two second penalty for each problem answered incorrectly.

Player Profiles

Math Bingo saves player information with custom player profiles. Each player profile consists of a unique name (up to 20 characters) and a fun cartoon avatar. The player profiles display total number of games played, total number of high scores achieved, and total number of Bingo Bugs collected. The guest profile does not store any information and therefore cannot achieve high scores or collect Bingo Bugs. The guest profile is useful for adults who want to play Math Bingo without their scores going into the scoreboard.
