About Lil Requester

Lil’ Requester is a unique application that was founded by parents for parents and created to help children with socio-communication challenges express themselves and their needs effectively. This application will enable the user to communicate their needs and express themselves verbally enabling them to make decisions or choices easily. The application is available on iOS and is free from in-app adverts. Lil’ Requester is suitable for ages 18 months to 7 years.

The application is fully customisable and includes a range of communication topics such as places, people, emotions, activities and more. The developers state that “ Lil’ Requester was founded by parents for parents and created to help with socio-communication challenges express themselves and their needs effectively. In doing so, this application also helps further develop and reinforce communication through visuals and audio cues which are critical foundations for development throughout life”. The application works on mobile and tablets devices in portrait mode.

Lil Requester Review

Having signed up for the application the Home Dashboard displays many features after a short introductory splash screen. It is noted that the caretaker of the account could be a parent, teacher, nanny or therapist.

  • The Home Dashboard includes the following menus:
  • The ‘+’ icon – This enables the main user of the application (known as the caretaker) to add a child.
  • The ‘Settings’ icon – This enables the user to access account settings such as my Activity, my People, my Places, my feeling, reports, settings and log out.
  • The ‘My Kids’ icon – Shows children that I have added to the application.
  • The ‘Shared with me’ icon – This shows children that are shared within the application. Information can be easily shared as a child profile with a therapist, teachers or family.
  • The ‘Kid Report’ icon – This provides a Report to monitor the request progress of a given child.
  • The ‘Caretaker’ icon – This provides access and contact details of the main user of the application.
  • The ‘Share’ icon – This enables the user to share information about a child via email or mobile with a supporting note.

We started by adding a child to the application. Using the ‘+’ icon we added a child and were asked the following questions:

  • Gender
  • Name
  • Profile Picture
  • Age and Date of Birth
  • Question: ‘My child seems to regress and struggles with vocabulary acquisition’ – Answer Yes/No/Not sure
  • Question: ‘My child’s speech is not very clear’ – Answer Yes/No/Not sure
  • Question: ‘My child isn’t verbal’ – Answer Yes/No/Not sure
  • Question: ‘My child doesn’t understand most words, sentences and instructions’ – Answer Yes/No/Not sure
  • Question: ‘My child vocabulary is less than 50 words’ – Answer Yes/No/Not sure

Based on the answers to the questions the application will recommend a level to start at. We were recommended LR2 and started on Level 1. The child will appear in the Home Dashboard where the child profile can be edited and the child can be reassessed. The menu in the top-left provides communication menus for My activity, My People, My Places and My feelings. Each communication menu can be added to a selected child and includes the following topics:

  • ‘My Activity' – These include communication words such as eat, sleep, play, read, pee, dance, hug, kiss, nap, ride, write, draw, colour, jump, run and climb.
  • ‘My People’ – These include communication words such as mummy, daddy, grandpa and grandma.
  • ‘My Places’ – These include communication words such as Home, school. Park, playground, church, McDonald’s, KFC and shopping.
  • ‘My Feelings’ – These include communication words such as cold, hot, happy, sad, weak, tired, sick, hungry and sleepy.

Each of these communication menus contains sub-menus for further content such as the ‘Play’ menu in the ‘My Activity’ menu where words are included such as outside, PlayStation, PSP, iPad games, Lego, blocks, chu-chu train, toys, soccer, basketball and piano.

It is noted that all of the communication categories contain a ‘Settings’ menu where items can be applied to all children, chosen randomly and added to favourites. All words can be edited, added to, searched and ore-recorded using the child’s voice. The interface is uncluttered and the icons are presented well. It is also noted that when an item, such as food, is added to the application the user has the option of taking a photo, choosing a photo or using the comprehensive gallery of photos in the Smart photo library.

The ‘Report’ section of the application, accessed via the dashboard, allows the user to view weekly, daily and monthly reports. This section of the application is a powerful insight into each child’s communication needs and is an excellent tool for sharing information whether you are a therapist, teacher or family member.

How will parents benefit?

Parents can use the application for children who are struggling with communication. Many of today’s children are auditory and visual learners. Parents have the opportunity to sit with their child and watch and listen to content with the ability to add words where desired. This application gives the child the ability to be able to communicate and express themselves with ease allowing them to make decisions and choices which could otherwise result in frustration, tantrums and even isolation.

How will teachers benefit?

Teachers have the opportunity to sit with their class and watch and listen to content with the ability to add words where desired. This application gives the child the ability to be able to communicate and express themselves with ease allowing them to make decisions and choices which could otherwise result in frustration, tantrums and even isolation. The teacher can manage the students using multiple student profiles and pictures. Reports can be collated and shared with other professionals to monitor and check the progress of the class or individual. This platform is also ideal for those students with special needs or who have difficulty with communication such as those students with dyslexia or speech impediments.

How will the user benefit?

It is easy to use! The user will find the interface a pleasure to use with a simple interface and visual aids. The user needs very little training when using the application enabling the user to gain confidence with their communication needs. The user will use the application when needed to communicate, increasing their vocabulary, helping them avoid communication frustration and possible tantrums.

What we love about the Lil’ Requester app

Lil’ Requester is an excellent application and we loved the following features:

  • The developers should be congratulated on the vast amount of communication words including the graphical icons and easy to navigate menu systems.
  • The application has a wonderful feel, the interface is easy to navigate and the layout of the platform is a delight to use.
  • We loved the fact that the child can record their voice when linking to words and phrases. Voices from other family members can also be recorded to help with voice recognition and providing phrases to be used to comfort the child.
  • The ‘Reports’ section of the application is a powerful insight into each child’s communication needs and is an excellent tool for sharing information whether you are a therapist, teacher or family member.
  • We loved the fact that other words can be added by taking a photo, choosing a photo or using the comprehensive gallery of photos in the Smart photo library.

What the Lil’ Requester app could improve on

Lil’ Requester is an excellent application and there is a limited amount of improvements that can be made, however, we have suggested the following:

  • The application could benefit from an avatar as the child profile picture. The child could also be involved in creating this avatar.
  • When setting up the child’s profile, examples could be given of the types of communication challenges the child is displaying to help inform the user about the question. As a parent, we were unsure how to answer these.
  • Is it not clear what the LR stands for in the initial child profile setup?
  • We would like to see the My people, My places, My feelings section in the Home Dashboard linked to the child’s profile. We are unsure why this is in the ‘Settings’ menu.
  • Although the menu system is comprehensive and easy to follow we were unsure of why the chosen word turned grey when selecting, we would also like to see a bank of words and phrases that are used regularly by a child linked directly to their profile in the Dashboard section.
  • This is a really powerful application and we can see the benefits for users who are unable to express themselves, however, we believe that the application could be more powerful if the user could access their communication needs easier rather than going through sub-menus. Providing a bank of words or phrases used previously could be of benefit. Sometimes simple is better.
  • The developers may consider rewards certificates for significant milestones within communication. This could also be supported by a leaderboard for classroom competitions.

How much does Lil Requester cost?

Lil’ Requester is a free application with some priced plans available thereafter. Changes in price plans include further customisable activates, multiple child management, offline management and reporting/requesting options.

Is Lil’ Requester safe to use?

Yes. Although the platform requires an email account the application does not contain any offensive elements or 3rd party adverts. The platform uses a Lock child requesting workspace and developers have put in place effective data security in line with HIPAA and PIPEDA protocols. The platform is housed with Microsoft Azure cloud service and security.

Overall Rating of the application

Lil’ Requester is a fantastic communication application that has endless possibilities for those children with learning difficulties, those who struggle to communicate emotional, children who wish to expand their vocabulary and those who wish to reinforce and explore communication through visual and audio cues. There are several communication apps on the market and this is by far one of the best. The unique features and simple interface make it a pleasure to use along with the multiple profiles and reporting system. Lil’ Requester comes highly recommended by The EducationalAppStore.com
