About LetraKid PRO - Handwriting ABC

Letra Kid PRO is educational game for kids with ten writing fonts commonly used in schools and it includes the 3 most popular typefaces used in USA, Canada and UK. The app is aimed at children between 4 to 8 years old and is designed to help them to learn pre-cursive and print block handwriting correctly. Using the app will help the child recognise letters, pronunciation and correct letter formation. The game has different levels of difficulty to help children learn in small steps.

Teacher Review

LetraKid PRO was easy to download and takes up an insignificant amount of room on the iPad at just over 40MB. The intro screen is fairly intuitive with bright colours and large icons denoting the different facilities available. Clicking on the customary sound icon reveals a comprehensive muting facility that not only offers the music sound to be turned off, but also the voice and sound effects. Clicking on the icon of the child also reveals a vast array of avatars to choose from, fifty to be precise. The parent/teacher also appears to have a choice of setting up three children, with separate avatars and names.

The parents page icon reveals, after the customary hard maths question is answered correctly, four choices. The rate and review button sends you over to the App Store where you can write and review about the app. The contact support button links to your email system with a pre-set email for you to complete and send, you just have to fill in your query. The find us on Facebook button links you to the app page on FaceBook, a site that is fairly active and gives you the reassurance that someone can help. The final icon provides the parent/teacher with the facility to toggle on or off the mini games within the app.

The settings is again very comprehensive, an enduring feature of this app. The settings are being set up for one of the individual children that can also be locked in and therefore all three children can have a unique set of scenarios. The features include, the language (currently sixteen in total), left or right hand use, fonts (currently 10 including the pre cursive types), level of difficulty (the first level is automatic drawing and then progresses to assisted and then freehand), letter formation (three options; standard, cursive and from top), with or without lines showing and finally a reset button.

When the child starts playing they have a choice of four games, capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers and a general shape formation. The lowercase pre cursive was my choice, but the generic principles are the same across the game. Having chosen the level where I needed assistance the presence of the learning algorithm is cleverly lurking. When the user completes a letter, the indicator at the top right circles around to show how competent you have been and you also get an instant snapshot of where you may have strayed over the lines this is all done very professionally without pressure and is a real strength of the app, the customary words of encouragement are inoffensive and kind but could become repetitive and irritating, hence the mute button! When the child reaches outstanding and the circle is filled in all around the next screen is a fun activity to ensure that the letter can be recognised, this entails the child popping the balloon with the letter they have just completed.

The choice of fonts and writing rules covers the curriculum for teaching handwriting in many countries (US, UK, Canada, Finland, Germany etc.) and it is recommended to be used in class.

I like this programme and my grandchildren did too. I have played many of these applications before and the market is fiercely competitive, but I believe this one has a comprehensive and professional approach that combines an engaging experience for children but a proper use of child interactions to promote learning in a non judgmental way. A must for the busy parent or teacher to put in their toolbox.

With a unique and real-time feedback feature as well as complex tracing evaluation algorithms, LetraKid is not just another tracing app.

This is a new approach, focused on creating a fun game by utilizing handwriting mechanics itself. This avoids using distracting random rewards or secondary game mechanics that can break and confuse the learning process, optimizing learning progress and educational appeal to children.

The real time feedback will give both audio and graphic clues about the quality of the tracing and will adjust with difficulty level.
Our tracing evaluation algorithms allow for an accurate and fun reward, using a 5 star rating for each exercise. This engages and motivates the kids to progress and to strive for more.
