Learn French with Babbel Review

Babbel’s language apps are powerful mobile vocabulary trainers for those who want to learn a new language. The lessons focus on building basic conversational skills across a complex range of vocabulary topics that cover everything from simple greetings to more advanced vocabulary related to culture, media and society. Everything you need to break down language barriers.

Though the main accent is on the vocabulary practice the app gives you the option to explore everything that Babbel has to offer on their website where you can also find grammar courses. Going into Vocabulary you can learn words relating to categories of your choice.

The first lesson of any category is included in the app. Other French vocabulary packages will need to be downloaded. For this you need to create a free account with Babbel as this will be the only way your progress will be analyzed.

We decided to choose the Animals category and we started to learn about Birds. Each topic offers you basic or advanced vocabulary exercises. On choosing a set of exercises you are then given the options to either: Learn and remember (a first look), Deepen your knowledge (practise and apply) and Vocabulary (for an overview).

How does it work? You are given 4 images depicting different objects (a bird in our exercise). A clear, native speaker will exemplify the correct audio pronunciation of the word. You can choose by pressing on the microphone icon to test your pronunciation through speech recognition. You are scored out of 100 depending on how close you get to the correct pronunciation. It takes practice and make sure you check your microphone settings before you start. The next step is to identify, having all the 4 images in front of you, which word is corresponding each image by tapping the correct one when the word is displayed. The last exercise is to write the words. You’ve seen the word several times so far and you are given all the letters you need to form the word. If the letter sequence is not correct you can try again.

In the ‘Deepen your knowledge’ set of exercises you have to complete short sentences with the words you are learning. The English translation for the sentences is available on the screen and is read out to you very clearly. The app is very easy to use and we found the use of images very helpful for memorizing words. Having your French accent rated is our favourite feature and very important in order to improve your communication skills in a foreign language.

Revising at optimal intervals solidifies the learning in your long term memory and the Review manager does just that. It had us entertained for quite some time and felt more like we were playing a game rather than studying a foreign language. The integrated speech recognition is so good that we believe this is an app for users who need to get over the shyness of speaking in other languages.

The only criticism we have is that we think the pacing is a bit slow and the app could benefit from some shortcuts to jump some steps when you return to exercises.  Babbel is also available in Dutch, English, German, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.  The app receives a well-deserved 5 star EAS Certification and the EAS Recommended status.
