Teacher Review

Upon opening the application, the user is shown a beautifully designed interface that is simple and effective with the Sherston opening splash screen. The home screen provides a graphic of the world with the pupil log in displayed in the top left. As with all app apps from Sherston that are on the Big Clever Learning platform, a class or user can be set up. This is done via a class or user code and needs to be set up before the application is used. This is a great feature as parents and teachers can monitor the progress of the child or class. This enables you to monitor sessions, average sessions per pupil, number of active pupils, usage at home vs. school, average session time and total session time. This data can also be shared. The child or pupil is displayed in the top left of the home screen.

The music can be turned off via the button on the top right and the play button lets us access the application. There is a small introduction about the app which follows an optional user name. The next screen displays the 13 different languages the app will translate. Once a language has been chosen the app shows the topics available. These include; Numbers, Letters, Colours, Classroom, Subjects, Outside, Directions, Shapes and Sizes, Food, Drink, Family and friends, People, Weather and the Seasons. There is also a quiz at the end. Once a topic has been chosen the application displays the word and translation with simple and effective graphics. We would like to see the languages separated by coloured text and the ability to not only sound the English but also the chosen language. The developers can be commended for the vast content of the app and the quality of the graphics and its simple layout. We would like to see an option to tick topics that have been covered so the student can check their progress within the app.

The quiz is a good addition although we did find that the questions may be difficult to read or understand for someone who is just learning the basics of the language. The quiz provides instant feedback but does not provide the correct answer if wrong. The quiz displays a score out of 25 at the end. The developers may consider a leader-board type scoring method to promote competition as well as retaining scores.

Overall we found this app very easy to use and great for students just learning the English language. The graphics and audio are clear and precise and the language options are plentiful. This would be a great addition to any primary school with students whose first language is not English.

From the Developer

We created this app to help children at UK schools whose first language is not English. It works by simply enabling children to translate basic vocabulary from their mother tongue.

Children with limited literacy can develop their Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) by navigating the app using a combination of illustrations and text to find the audio content they need.

The app includes the everyday vocabulary that a child needs in the course of their school day such as:

  • Numbers
  • Letters
  • Colours
  • Classroom
  • Subjects
  • Outside
  • Directions
  • Shapes and sizes
  • Food
  • Drink
  • Family and friends
  • People and weather
  • Seasons

The audio can be slowed down to allow the child to listen carefully and repeat. Repeatedly hearing sounds and pronunciations enables the child’s brain to adapt to sound patterns.

Languages available include:

  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Chinese
  • French
  • Gujarati
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Punjabi
  • Somali
  • Tamil
  • Turkish
  • Urdu

Educational benefits

  • Vocabulary acquisition
