Koala Phonics Review
What is Koala Phonics app
Koala Phonics app is an app aimed towards young children to help their understanding and use of phonics and therefore to improve their abilities in the English language. Due to the learning in the app it does mean it can be used by anyone who is starting to learn the English language. It is a game based app that has the user listen, and watch to see how sounds are said and how they sound before matching them to the correct pictures of items that match that sound.
The app offers the user the ability to not only hear how the sound be made but through videos, focussing on the mouth of a child saying the sounds, they are also able to see how the mouth looks as they say it too. This means that instead of just being told how the sound is made users are able to see exactly how they can make the sound and copy this too.
What we love about Koala Phonics
The Koala Phonics app has a number of really good features that make it a great app for young children to use both in an educational and home setting. The fact that sounds are not just read out but that the user is able to see exactly how the sounds are formed is a really good addition as this means that users are able to copy the mouth formation to make sure they are able to repeat the sound too.
What skills does it improve?
Koala Phonics app is a language learning app. Through using it, children are able to develop and further their understanding and use of phonics, a fundamental element that makes up the English language. Breaking down the individual sounds and then having users match the sounds to the correct words helps them to not only know and learn the sounds but also to widen their vocabulary of different words too.
What age is it appropriate for?
Koala Phonics is rated for children between 3 and 7.
Is Koala Phonics easy to use?
The app is incredibly easy to use even though there are extra features within the app users can access. I would suggest that as the app is aimed at younger users they should have an adult to assist and work with them to get the most out of the app. I would suggest that this is an ideal way to use the app too as parents are able to say the names of some of the items and to help their child to then link the sounds of what their parent is saying to the sound they are looking for. This interaction will also allow parents to work with their child and to know where they might be struggling or to repeat some of the learning outside of the app just in their general conversations and learning.
How will students benefit?
Children will enjoy the experience of playing the game in the app and working their way through the levels whilst also challenging themselves to keep improving upon their scores in each of the levels. Children will get a really good grounding and understanding of phonics and how they are formed and what they sound like too.
How will teachers benefit?
Teachers can make use of children using this app at home with the parents and setting them certain sounds dependant on what it is they want them to learn.
How will parents benefit?
Parents, especially if they interact with their child during the app have a lot to benefit from it. The app allows parents to see how well their child is doing in the app from the scores they are receiving and their proficiency.
What Koala Phonics can improve on?
Koala Phonics is a really good app however there are some things that could be added to the app to further improve it. If the developer could build in a way to track and monitor how well the user is doing then this would allow any adults to see how much they are progressing and any areas that may need to be refocussed on.
I really like the fact that the user is able to see how the sounds are formed from the video focussing on the child’s mouth as they say the sound. To further enhance this aspect the developers could utilise the camera on most devices and have the user mimic the sound formation and replay this on the screen so they can also see, against the correct video how they match up.
How much does Koala Phonics cost?
Koala Phonics costs £0.99p to download and this allows full access to the app.
What is included with the free version vs. paid?
There is no free version of the app.
Is Koala Phonics safe to use
Koala Phonics content is completely child-friendly and contains no content that could be considered inappropriate or unsafe for children.
Overall rating of the app
Koala Phonics has received a 4 star EAS rating and this is due to the premise of the app, the learning within it and how the app goes about teaching the users as well the actual gameplay of the app too, especially with its interactive elements.
