About KidsCast - Watch, Play & Learn

Kids Cast is like a one-stop shop for a mix of education and entertainment activities that are completely safe and appropriate for children.  Videos, games, books, songs and paper-based activities will give your child a great resource to learn from and use to avoid boredom.

Teacher Review

Many apps contain a lot of content of a single type, be it music, video or games.  Quite different from these, KidsCast is a truly varied app as it contains all sorts of things to do and watch and it assures adults that everything within is safe for children to use unsupervised.

If children know what they want to do in the app, the material is easy to find.  If they don't know, they will enjoy browsing through the vast wealth of content of a broad range of types.  Videos, games, books, songs, magazines, musical instruments and more are there to entertain and educate.  The contents would be a cost-effective way for schools to bring a wealth of suitable material into their libraries and for parents to ensure that their children have access to a broad array of multimedia content that you can be assured is suitable for them.

The video content is of high quality both in terms of how it is displayed in the app and in its production.  Two series of the popular puppets of Sooty and Friends are included as well as other entertaining shows.  Some of these shows are instructional and creative, such as how to draw.  This will pair nicely with the simple art package built into the app. In a novel approach, there are also some broadcast TV shows from times past.

Your appreciation of some of the classic video content will depend on your own age.  For some of us, we can view these as revisiting old friends in a nostalgia-laden re-enactment of TV in times past.  For others, they might appear a little...odd.  Young children, however, have no concept of old-fashioned and can enjoy entertainment, however old, for what it is and maybe they will fall in love with 1970s TV characters as much as 1970s children did.

This video content clearly has a justifiably large file size and a slow internet connection can build a bit of a wait in before it can be enjoyed, but that is not the fault of the app.  It can, however, struggle when a download takes too long, for instance, if your home connection is not on a fibre network, videos can fail to appear however long you wait and can cause an occasional crash back to the device's home screen.  This is not too frequent, though, and is one of those things that usually gets corrected to be handled better in updates.

As well as videos, there are some child-friendly games reminiscent of some famous games designed for older players.  They're simple to play and fun and they'll give young children the feeling that they're doing the same as their old siblings.

There is a great book library in there including many books that may well be on the shelves of your local bookshop.  Their inclusion here gives you a great store of bedtime stories and tales for children to flick through independently without having to buy or store a shelf full of physical books.

Lively songs are always popular with children and there are plenty of those included in the app too.  They're catchy and ideal for children but you'll probably want to give your child some headphones if you want to avoid them burrowing their way into your head too.

The Imagine Magazine deserves a special mention.  This is a child-friendly magazine that is added to the app regularly as well as having all of its back issues also available.  This can be printed from within the app by an adult (printing is behind a child lock).  Each issue contains a variety of puzzles, stories, and activities suitable for children.  These are, of course, paper-based but this acknowledges that children still need to build familiarity and control of pens and pencils as well as keyboards and touch gestures.  The magazine is a great addition that really adds value to the app.

This is an app with broad and varied coverage and quite a new one so there are a few rough edges that will likely be improved over time.   For example, there is the odd glitch such as objects not falling correctly in one of the games.  Sound can disappear on videos until they are paused and then restarted.  A few tweaks to user interactions could also make the app feel a little more natural.  For example, the musical keyboard does not feel 'right' because it plays a note when a key is released, not when it is pressed as would be the case on the real thing.

Don't take these issues out of proportion, though.  This is a big app and they fade into the background against the quantity of what a subscription gains you.  You can access the app's content through a trial and you should certainly do this to see just how much is there.  Whether you want children to have something to do on a long journey, have access to books to read before bedtime or have a source of entertainment whenever they feel at a loose end, KidsCast is a great choice.
