KidloLand Kids Toddler Games Review

Upon opening the application, the user is shown the developers delightful splash screen which is thoroughly engaging followed by an example of the content which can be skipped.

The opening ‘Home screen’ displays the child’s age in the top right along with a ‘settings’ option. The child’s age can be changed via a protected parental lock. Here the parents can choose age groups of under 2, 2-4, 4-5, 5-6 and 6-7. We were unsure if parents may get confused if a child was 5 years of age; do they choose 4-5 or 5-6?

The ‘Settings’ option allows parents to explore further settings via the parental lock. These include managing downloads, 3 different languages options (American English, Spanish and Portuguese), a help section, a developer contact section, music on/off and your subscription status. Although the ‘Help’ section has several ways to contact the developer we would like to see instructions or ideas of how the parent might use the application with their child.

It goes without saying that the content of this application is truly amazing with a vast amount of differentiated subject content. Depending on the age group chosen the content includes:

•    130+ popular nursery rhymes including Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary had a little Lamb, Old MacDonald, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Wheels on the Bus, If You Are Happy, London Bridge, BINGO, and more.

•    435+ fun & original children's songs to teach including ABCs, phonics, spelling, numbers, fruits, vehicles, animals, vegetables, animal sounds, birds, months of the year, days of the week, lullabies, Christmas songs, and much more

•    234 educational and fun stories, including Early reading stories, bedtime stories, fables, and animal stories.

•    400+ educational activities and games including learning games for every toddler which will teach sorting, counting & spelling.

•    200+ Math learning games including counting, number sense, shapes, sorting, etc. easily.

•    30 Coding games with 600+ levels including simple sequences, sequences and loops. Coding is a key component of STEM learning for kids.

We opted for ages 5-6 to review some of the following content; coding, number sense, counting, shapes, sorting, comparison, patterns, addition facts, subtraction facts, addition, subtraction, spelling songs, cartoon games, and art colouring. Each game is coded with a single icon for its format such as a controller for a game, a musical not for a song etc.

Coding – Basics of Coding

The content here is delightfully presented with a child-friendly interface. It is noted that the content will need to download so off-line gameplay may be difficult. ‘Track builder’ consists of 15 levels which encourage children to use visual basic coding to move the bunny train driver to the finish line.  These include straight line movements and rotation. The levels get increasingly harder as the game progresses and an animation reward is revealed at the end. The developers may consider a reward area where the users can see the animations or rewards they have gained.

Addition up to 10 Numbers – 45 levels appear here! All of these games focus on animated gameplay using number 1 to 10. Each game is beautifully presented, narrated and can be used without parental support. We did notice that many of the number selection games had no consequence of the incorrect number was chosen. Some of our users did not know the answer but continued to press any of the numbers to progress. The developers may consider a number of restricted attempts at the answer or by showing the user where they went wrong.

Spelling Songs – These delightful songs allow the user to explore a number of different spellings through animated songs. The animation is wonderful and engaging and the user has the option to pause and repeat the songs accordingly. Although these songs are of great educational value, fun and engaging we did find that some of the content may be too young for the chosen age range of 5 to 6 years of age.

Cartoon Games – Chomping Monsters – This animated story allows the user to build a spaceship using moving parts, dress their chomping monsters, programme the spaceship, collect the stars, learn the planets and create a flag. All great fun!

Patterns – Pattern snake – This test the user’s ability to follow a pattern sequence using shape and colour to match the caterpillar's body. Once again the patterns get harder as the user progresses.

The content within this application is like having a complete game learning console at your fingertips and the developers should be commended for the amount of work that has gone into producing an application with such a vast amount of content with such educational value and variety.

We would like to see how the learning games matched against the curriculum standards for both the US and English. This may be ideal for parents who wish to target a specific topic for their child.

‘KidloLand Kids Toddler is an excellent application that offers a great starting point for children wishing to explore learning within a variety of different subjects in a fun and engaging way. The application provides excellent opportunities for parents and children to improve their communication and literacy skills by talking about the songs, rhymes, games and interactive learning. This application comes recommended by The EducationalAppStore.com.
