Teacher Review

Young children seem to love the variety that apps full of mini-activities provide. They can explore them to find new things and they can revisit them to enjoy the comfort of old favourites. While doing so, they learn new things and consolidate and practise existing skills and knowledge. Kiddopia is one of these apps and is packed, more than most, with games and activities.

Each of the activity types is categorised on the main page, such as ABC Animal Adventures, Learn With Songs, Math Whiz and many more. It has a very diverse set of educational aims some of which are precursors to classroom lessons, like letters and numbers. Others are more general such as animals, community helpers and so on. Creative pursuits are covered with a musical keyboard, complete with a variety of instruments to select, and photography activities that use the device's camera.

Selecting one of the main options usually opens up another selection of activity types. Many of these, in turn, have different levels or challenges to play. It all adds up to a huge quantity of activities with a broad variety of play-styles, entertainment and educational coverage.

With such variety, you might expect there to be a reduction in graphical or sound quality, but this is not the case. Each activity is explained and supported by spoken word feedback. This can occasionally be a little stilted, as it is clearly formed from sentence parts. This is a small concession, though, as any other way would have sounded worse or made the app impractical in file size. This only applies to spoken sentences, the Learn With Songs activity sounds excellent and teaches with some catchy tunes.

The graphics are consistently clear and child-friendly. Numbers and letters are clear and easy to read. Supported by the spoken names, they help to build the links between the written form and the name.

Often, there are interactions that are not necessary to succeed in the games but they help support the player's thinking process. For example, when counting items in one of the Math Whiz games, children can jump straight to answering the question but they can also tap each item in turn and have the app count along with them. Where applicable, this is a great feature, especially as it is optional. Those who need the support can use it but those who have progressed can choose to skip it rather than go through the motions.

The style of activities varies. Joining dots, choosing answers, manipulating icons, pushing buttons and other methods of play ensures that children can choose a game that matches their current mood.

The downside of all of this content is, however, the size of the app - it is a 1GB file. It will take a while to download in the first instance and demands a sizable slice of the host device's storage. This is by no means a criticism as it is a physical necessity and the alternative of on-demand downloading has its disadvantages such as requiring a constant WiFi connection and will still eventually expand to a comparable size. Just be aware that devices with smaller storage capacities might need a bit of rearranging before this app will fit.

You can assess this app with your child, in a cut-down version, for free. To expand the app into its full format you can choose between a monthly or yearly subscription. Which version will suit your child is very much an individual thing. Some children love to revisit activities and improve, others like to see something new each time. Both are catered for in this app as its content is varied and large enough to offer something new for quite some time, but those who don't care for revisiting past games will obviously be ready to move on sooner.

Kiddopia is a high-quality app full of content. If you are looking for an app with a comprehensive selection of educational mini-games to teach and entertain your children, it should be in your shortlist of apps to check out.
