Teacher Review

Homer Reading is a proven learn to read app that motivates kids ages 2 to 8 to improve their reading ability. Homer app teaches kids on how to read step by step, 1000+ interactive lessons on phonics, sight words, ABCs and more. Learn with Homer has proven to increase early reading scores by 74%.

Kids can learn to read with Homer Reading. It covers learning discrete aspects of reading such as phonics, sight words and the alphabet as well as the reading of full children's books that are appropriate to your child's literacy level and age.  Homer Reading is suited for early readers between the ages of 2 and 8.

Kids using this app to learn to read will not all be starting from the same place. Depending on their age, natural interest in words and letters, and support, they will each have a different literacy basis on which to build their learning. Homer Reading takes this into account from the start by asking parents to enter some key information about what their child can already do when reading. From this, it creates a custom learning path for each child to follow.

The learning path guides children through the activities best suited to their current understanding and develops children's reading skills at a good pace. It is possible, however, to pursue specific aspects of learning to read in the practice section of the app where the activities can be accessed at will. This would be particularly useful if you feel that your child could benefit from revisiting a specific topic or one that has become especially relevant or interesting to them for some reason.

All of the activities are beautifully presented with clear graphics, easy interactions and spoken instructions.  They cover a variety of key skills for kids who are learning to read and are well suited to the format of an app.  Children trace letters, match letters to sounds, choose words, play memory games, and more. The activities are all useful and relevant for young learners.  In a few instances, most noticeably letter formation, your child might be taught something that does not match their school's curriculum.  If this is the case for your child, you'll have to think about how likely this is to confuse them.  It will be very much an individual consideration.

As well as the activities, two sections cover longer-format writing. The one, 'Stories', reads out tales while animated illustrations play.  These are similar in format to videos with subtitles and they play from start to finish. They are well made, child-friendly, and good fun.  The subtitles highlight each word as it is spoken so that children can read along.

Another section has a more traditional reading experience.  Books are represented on the device and children choose to advance through the story at their own pace. There are some really good options in this section. The story can be read to children as they follow along, they can choose to read it for themselves, and they can choose to record themselves reading it aloud.  These are very useful options and sure to get a lot of use.

The learning experience in Homer Reading is tailored, to some extent, to your child's interests. Alongside the initial information you enter for your child, is a section on their interests. This will let the app populate its activities and feedback with graphics and objects from themes that your child likes.  Dinosaur loving children will enjoy seeing dinosaurs pop up in the activities while those who love fairy tales will be graced by visits from princesses and other characters.

This is an app that has been developed in North America so those from other regions will notice that the app spells some words differently from them. The narration has a noticeable North American accent but it remains clear and easy to listen to so should not be a problem.

There is a generous 30-day free trial for this app compared to the 7-day trial that is typical of many other educational apps. This will give you and your child adequate time to appraise the app.  Remember to set a reminder somewhere to decide whether you want to keep this subscription going.  You'll need to cancel, if you choose to do this, through your subscription settings - remember, just deleting the app will not end any subscription you take out.

Kids can learn foundational reading skills such as basic letter sounds, letter and word recognition, critical thinking, and reading comprehension. By reading or listening to the stories, kids can also learn about animals, world cultures, music, and more.

Homer Reading is a well-featured app that admirably fulfils its goal of helping your child learn to read. As with any app that is designed for long term use, you must test its suitability to your child's tastes and interests. Homer Reading app is free to download and a 30-day free trial lets you try Homer Reading and Homer Stories.
