About Gibson: Learn to play guitar

Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher is an in-depth app that allows users to develop their skills on the guitar across a range of genres and abilities. It teaches the student how to start to use the guitar from the very basics, understanding how to pick, and what a fret is, identifies and listens to the student as they play, and allows them to learn to play alongside a range of songs. However, there is even more depth than this.

Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher also allows you to access a wide range of songs regardless of your focus on your guitar course by accessing their library, playing alongside the recording, and adapting features of this yourself. Whilst this is suitable for age 4, the main suitability is based on the ability and skills of the player intended. Ideally, I would suggest it is suitable for any learner above the age of 11. It is compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch as well as iPad, and requires iOS 13.0 or later. It also has an Android version. The app is free to download and provides you with a free trial for the yearly subscription. However, it then has in-app purchases for the subscription-based service. There are no other adverts on top of this. It develops skills in performance, building repertoire, and allows solo instruments to play alongside an accompaniment that can easily be personalised to their skill set.

Gibson: Learn to play guitar Review

What we love about Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App

What I love about the Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App, is the opportunity of building the performer’s repertoire through a very wide array of pieces. Not only this, but it allows freedom and independence to adapt these pieces to suit your needs. You start by joining your learning course, and the tutor provides tutorials, videos, and a step-by-step process of building your guitar skills. Alongside this, you can play with the app, and it listens to the pitches and identifies if you have made mistakes, and explains whether the note was missed, too high, or too low. You work through your learning programme, making this a very successful curriculum.

Alongside this, you can also choose any song you wish from the database in the app, regardless of your ability. The app will teach you how to play each section of the song, and you can also adjust the song you play alongside, by altering the volume of the guitar or the accompaniment, looping the tracking, adjusting the tempo, or restarting the song. The focus is so enjoyable because it is personalised for each learner that wishes to access different music without having to purchase books.

You can also access a wide range of video and audio articles via Gibson TV! Gibson is one of the best guitar learning app available in the market.

What skills does it improve?

This app improves your playing ability and listening skills with the guitar, including identifying fretboards, reading notes and visualising notation, playing accurately, both melodically and harmonically.

What age is it appropriate for?

This is ideal for students and performers 11-18 or older, who are building their repertoire skills to a higher level. I also like that you can choose your preferred genre, and this is not solely focused on rock, so you can build your skills across a range of a specific style.

Is Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App easy to use?

Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App is easy to use, due to the simple layout of the app. With only a small amount of clickable icons, and a very clear font and textured layout, it makes it very easy to navigate the app, and allows you to scroll through different pieces of music by filters.  As so much of this is video-based and audio based, you have to listen to the teacher to navigate your way through, which makes you focus solely on listening and learning with the app.

How will students benefit?

Students benefit through a developed repertoire of music and a more successful opportunity of building their array of music, which can often be hindered by a lack of ability to locate scores, or play alongside an accompaniment, which is often something that musicians get little opportunity of doing.

How will teachers benefit?

Teachers benefit from this greatly, as it offers the support and differentiation required for some students on a more complex level, allowing teachers to be more effective in their delivery without having to create the resources themselves, and students to become more independent.

How will parents benefit?

As this app is available on the iPhone and Android phones, this also allows students to access their work at home, and communicate easily with the teacher at the next lesson in regards to their progress, which inevitably helps the parents to communicate and be part of the learning from home.

What can Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App improve on?

Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App could improve in their collaboration opportunities. At the moment, there are no collaboration opportunities on the app. The beginning of this would be the ability to record yourself playing alongside the app. This would really help the learner as they can listen to themselves back, and become a more reflective learner. This would then open up to lots of other opportunities, such as sharing this recording with people on the app, or sending it via email, or sharing it via social media platforms. This would be very beneficial for teachers and students, or peers, in order to listen and review different performances remotely. An educational version could then connect with Google Classroom so the recording can automatically get sent to the teacher.

How much does Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App cost? What is included with the free version vs. paid?

The app is free to download, and provides a free trial of the yearly subscription. In comparison to a paid version, this has:

In-App Purchases

Early bird yearly subscription - $89.99

Early bird Monthly Subscription - $14.99

Yearly subscription - $87.99

Monthly Subscription - $14.99

The subscriptions then include all of the lesson plans and course to develop your learning with interactive lessons. Due to the initial sign up that you must log in, it is unclear to me is there is a free version without the free trial to a yearly subscription; it appears that you must subscribe in some form.

Is Gibson: Your Guitar Teacher App safe to use? What is the overall rating?

The app is very safe to use. I would rate the app as 5 stars out of 5, as it provides an excellent learning journey for students who wish to learn the guitar.
