About GazziliMath
GazziliMath is an app designed to introduce and develop counting and arithmetic skills to pre-schoolers. Starting with counting forward and then backward, the activities progress though to basic addition, subtraction and finding halves. The progression is well judged and each activity builds appropriately on the previous one. Together the activities are tightly focused on a specific point of a child’s mathematical learning and so will fit in well with other forms of teaching the child is likely to be receiving at this time. To begin with the activities are locked so that the child cannot approach them out of order.

Correct answers are rewarded by an animation that often leads to the transition to the next question. Incorrect answers receive a “hmm, try that again” from the voice over. There are no limits to trying again so the correct answer could be achieved by just tapping through all of the selections. As the app is aimed at pre-schoolers this is not a criticism, there is no best way to approach dealing with wrong answers for this age group. While a child may discover that they can stumble upon the correct answer, the alternative method would be to end the activity after an incorrect answer. This would be disheartening and deprive the child of the chance to rethink the same question. This aspect, though, underlines why apps for this age group are at their best when used with some sort of adult guidance to maximise their teaching potential.
The activities are beautifully presented and well designed to teach and test the aspects of learning that they focus on. The graphics include a nice mix of animations to provide interest and to demonstrate and feedback on the answers given. Feedback on why an answer is correct provides good reinforcement of learning so even if the answer was provided at random it will often show just why it was correct. The child will not find themselves for long without the chance to interact. Some interactions are just for fun, like shaking the device to inflate balloons, which give an unexpected reward for progress. Other interactions are nicely varied with tapping, dragging and drawing lines the most common.
Special mention must go to the lovely Gazzili Fun Page on this app. Each section that the child completes places another section of an animal band on the page. Each can be toggled on and off. When toggled on their instruments play and they become animated. Each instrument forms a layer of a jolly tune. This forms a very entertaining and interactive rewrard that will spur children on to complete each section to see how the next instrument adds to the tune.
GazziliMath is a superb app that does exactly what it sets out to do. It does this in a stimulating and fun way and it is an excellent value-for-money app that supports a child’s learning as they begin to develop their counting skills. This is a fantastic app and has been awarded EAS Recommended Status with a 5 star rating.
