Fret Zealot: Learn Real Guitar Review

Fret Zealot features over 100 world-class courses covering 30+ genres, lessons, a vast song library, as well as a unique, optional state-of-the-art LED hardware component for your guitar that fits next to the frets and shows your colourised finger locations for 100% of the app content and videos. This is designed to help with engagement, and improve the success rate of users in learning to play the guitar/bass/ukulele.

What we love about Fret Zealot

Whether the Fret Zealot app is used on its own or in combination with the LED hardware unit, Fret Zealot provides a visually stimulating, simplified way to learn the guitar/bass/ukulele.

The courses included in the app are categorised for the user as either basic/beginner/intermediate. The learner can also choose a ‘player study’ so that they can perform in the style of their favourite artists e.g. Santana, Brian May, Eric Clapton etc. There are also pentatonic courses which help the user learn to solo and improvise. These available courses demonstrate that the app has been designed to focus on the learner playing with good technique and style from the outset. This means that the user is not getting wrapped up in having to digest complex notation systems in order to start learning their desired song and play like their guitar role models.

It is beneficial that each of the songs in the large library can be played in either normal playback mode or AI mode. In AI mode, the app will listen for you to play the correct note or chord before advancing, moving along at the learners own pace. The tools section includes handy reference material e.g. chord, scale charts, a tuner and metronome, but also includes the ‘light show’ tool which allows you to choose from different lighting displays if the LED hardware component is utilised.

What skills does it improve?

Fret Zealot develops the players stylistic and technical ability on their chosen instrument from the very start without having to learn complex notation systems. The learner will engage with simple, visual tablature play-along videos in the song library and improve their physical technique, chord style, lead guitar, soloing and many other techniques within the staged learning courses section. Fret Zealot develops aural learning, tablature reading and understanding of the notes on the fretboard, alongside physical and stylistic guitar/bass/ukulele skills.

For those with some previous guitar experience there is the option to find desired songs in the library and follow the ‘player study’ courses to imitate the stylistic playing of their favourite guitarists.

What age is it appropriate for?

The app is most suitable for secondary school children/college and university students or adult learners. It can be used by complete beginners or intermediate musicians or those who have tried guitar a little in the past but did not make as much progress as they had hoped. It is designed for those who are looking to teach themselves the guitar/bass/ukulele and has a lesson by lesson format within the courses which supports the weekly practice process.

Is Fret Zealot easy to use?

The courses, lessons and song library in the Fret Zealot app are easy to understand and use. The menu is very straightforward to use for a practice session and has a clear design with quick access to the course modules, song library, tools and settings.

How will students benefit?

Fret Zealot provides motivation for students to progress with their instrument through the vast song library which spans over 30 musical styles. Students will always be able to find a song to play that they like! The video tutorials in the courses section are easy to follow and each course is broken down into short, step-by-step lessons focusing on a particular playing aspect e.g. ‘guitar gym’ where the learner is shown and practices, developing their dexterity in moving around the guitar. This simplifies the learning, allows practice time for different techniques and could also support work completed with a tutor by providing a visual and clear recap.

How will teachers benefit?

Teachers can benefit from Fret Zealot by setting lessons for students to work through at home or assigning relevant songs within the library. The app will mean that the teacher knows the home study is guided both visually and aurally so that the students can practice with accuracy. During lessons, the play-alongs can be beneficial in allowing the teacher to observe the student’s technique whilst they play in time with the track. The tools section contains a handy tuner and metronome as well as chord and scale reference material, very useful resources for teachers to use in lessons.

How will parents benefit?

The Fret Zealot app breaks down home practice into bitesize lessons that have clear tutorials for learners to follow. The play-alongs for each song in the library mean that parents can hear how the child's guitar/bass/ukulele part fits in time with the track. If the LED hardware option is selected, this could help in keeping the child motivated and go a long way towards solving the common parental issue of getting their child to regularly practice.

We think Fret Zealot could improve on:

Fret Zealot includes tablature for over 80,000 songs in the library, which is hugely stimulating and beneficial for the user. Searching for a particular song in the library is easy but it would also be beneficial if the song library could be broken down by difficulty level. This would allow the user to easily choose a song related to their current playing standard without having to try different selections and work out what is manageable for them. A metronome is included in the app but not within the song library. Having this as an option for the play-alongs in the library would assist with counting and timing.

How much does Fret Zealot cost?

Fret Zealot is free to download. A subscription to the All Access Pass comes with 2-weeks free and then the cost is $14.99/mo | $139.99/yr which grants access to 3000+ Lessons, 100+ courses, and hundreds of detailed instructional videos, on top of all the free content/tools offered by the app.

In terms of the optional LED hardware component, you can purchase this from the website for $99.99 (LED strip only) or $199.99 which is inclusive of the Fret Zealot LED strip, Control Module, capo mount, related audio and charging cables along with a collapsible mobile phone stand and picks.

Is Fret Zealot safe to use?

Yes. The application does require an account and contact information to start with but no other personal data is requested. There are no chat features and the app's data protection compliance is explained on the website.

Overall rating of the app:

I would highly recommend this app to anyone wanting to learn the guitar/bass/ukulele especially if they have struggled previously to stay motivated in the learning process. The app’s LED hardware component makes this app unique, simple to see when you are getting the notes right and increases engagement. The song library is vast and the courses help to stage the learning process.

Fret Zealot makes learning the guitar fast, without having to pour over books, videos, or sheet music to find out where to put your fingers. You are focused on actual playing style and technique right from the start, learning guitar in a simple and visually stimulating way.
