Flip Review

What is Flip?

Flip is a free tool that allows teachers to upload discussion-style questions and students to answer by adding video responses. It helps teachers use technology in the right way. Flip has been a priceless resource to engage with my students and support their academic and social emotional needs. Flip has allowed for extensions, accommodations, and community building.

What's the latest feature in Flipgrid?

Flip recently introduced Topic Copilot, an AI-powered tool designed to assist educators in finding optimal topic suggestions effortlessly. Teachers can input a list of keywords, and the artificial intelligence algorithm takes over from there. While the effectiveness of the suggestions may vary initially due to the AI's learning curve, with some refinement of prompts through practice, Topic Copilot has the potential to become a valuable resource for generating fresh topic ideas for classroom use.

Flip Features and How does Flip work?

Interactive Video Responses

With Flip, teachers post discussion questions to a class Grid, and students respond with short, recorded videos. Students can add a title, one linked file, and stickers to their videos. Flip's class Grid functions as a message board where students can watch their peers' video responses as they appear in a shared display. Flip emphasizes social features, with student-to-student replies and custom reactions, similar to Instagram and Snapchat. As a formative assessment tool, Flip is a tool that empowers teachers to hear from each of their students via video.

Family Engagement

With Flip, teachers can share student videos with families through a private link. Family members can view the teacher's topic prompt, watch their student’s response, and download the video. There's even an option to invite family members to participate in Grids, the discussion-style questions.

Seamless Integration and Extensive Teacher Resources

Flip has custom integrations with Canvas and Microsoft Teams apps and can embed videos into Google Classroom, Schoology, Edmodo, and more. Flip provides extensive teacher tools, from instructional videos to full walk-throughs of how to use the site for a variety of subject areas (including STEAM and physical education). Teachers can also use Flip's Topic Discovery Library and filter by subject and age to search thousands of Topic templates shared by other educators.

What we like about Flip?

One of the most appealing aspects of Flip is our ability to interact using video, mimicking face-to-face interactions in the real world but without the pressure of a live classroom setting. Since we provide students with the space and time to respond at their own pace, it makes educational engagement accessible even for more anxious students who may typically feel excluded in class.

The feature allowing us to incorporate rich media encourages creativity and, perhaps more significantly, expression. By incorporating emojis, text, and stickers, we can engage with class content in a manner similar to interacting with friends on social media platforms.

This feature can help us feel less apprehensive and more empowered to express ourselves openly, leading to deeper engagement with the task at hand. Ultimately, this should result in enhanced learning outcomes and improved content retention.

Flip Pricing

Flip has three pricing levels, ranging from free to $200 per year. The free version includes one Grid with limited features, and the two paid levels for classrooms offer unlimited Grids and many more features.

Final Verdict: Flip Review

Flip improves traditional text-based discussion forums by incorporating teacher and student-created videos. Users have the ability to create a grid centered around a particular topic and invite peers, as well as individuals from around the globe, to contribute short video responses related to the topic. Download Flip previously known as Flipgrid for free on your iOS or Android device.
