Teacher Overview

The software application ‘Coco - Educational Games 2019’ is an easy to use educational games program, featuring multiple brain trainer activities such as children’s puzzle, children’s math games featuring mental math and memory games for children. Suitable for children from 5 to 10 years the application is subscription based on several levels from institutional subscriptions to individual subscriptions over various lengths of time. The application has in-app purchases relating to the content but is free from in-app adverts. The application is available in two languages English and French. The application works without a constant wi-fi connection.

Teacher Review

Once the application has been downloaded the user is shown a delightful, exciting opening screen that gives a welcome to the software. The user is asked to ‘Subscribe’ or ‘visit’ the home dashboard. The user is currently in ‘visitor’ mode without a subscription.

The ‘Home dashboard’ displays icons in the top left which include:

User Profile – Here a user can be created, such as, name, gender and date of birth. This creates a tailored, personal app experience.

The Information Icon – Access this via a parental lock to display the apps details as well as subscription details. There are also contact details for the developers.

The ‘Settings/Parameter’ icon allows the user to subscribe to the application or restore purchases already made.

The ‘Refresh’ icon allows data to be synchronised and resources updated. We found this user interface easy to navigate and beautifully set out.

Users can scroll through a number of games shown in the Home Dashboard. On the visitor mode these are:

Colour Form, Simili, Twins, Hunting Intruders, Crazy waterfall, Quizzle, Bouncing ball, Carnival of animals, Hangman, Colour Mind, Puzzle Plus, Calculus, The musical ear, Furious cards, Shooting stars, Syllabus, Chessboard, Flying balloons, Le poème perdu and Silly sequence. For this review we will choose four of the game play options.

Starting with Colour Form this game provides three levels (easy, medium and hard) and some easy initial instructions. The user will choose from Colour or shape followed by one or two players. The user is then asked to match the coloured top shape with three options shown below. A narration can be heard (although this does not enhance the experience) to help prompt the user. It is noted that the text is written in American English (color – colour). Once this has been completed a score if celebrated out of 10.

Returning to the Home dashboard the user can access the user score profile in the top right. Here the user can see information regarding their activity including the games played, score and time played. We particular liked the time display as this can help parents or teachers monitor screen time. The displayed core could also create competition in the classroom when using multiple profiles.

Calculus – Once again the initial instructions are easy to understand. Players can choose from 4 propositions to free answers and one or two player or against the buzzer.

The 4 proposition options give the player four possible answers whilst the free answer allows the player to type in the answer. We noted that a wrong answer was not highlighted in the game play for the free answers. The developers may consider adding a ‘hint’ or ‘wrong’ answer within the game play.

We liked the added feature of the application asking the user “how they were today?’ Our users liked this, however, when answered ‘unhappy’ the application did not respond.

The Musical Ear – Here the user has the option of ‘Son’ or ‘Instrument’ followed by ‘French’ or ‘English’. This game play is engaging although some of the sounds were hard to work out. The musical instruments were great fun to listen to. It is noted that when ‘French’ is chosen the questions are often a mixture of French and English rather than just one of the chosen languages.

Hangman – This take on the traditional Hangman gameplay is engaging and well presented. The child is asked to guess the word against the hangman be built with a wrong answer. The vowels are displayed at the top of the options with the child only allowing 4 wrong options before they are hanged!

Other games include:

  • Crazy Waterfall: Find the differences, before the bomb explodes
  • Hunting Intruder: Find the intruder among 4 proposals (in English or French).
  • Colour Mind: Memorize colour combinations with an increasing difficulty.
  • Relibulle: Connect the numbers and letters in the correct order.

  • Flying balloons: Train your reaction and memory by counting balloons passing. Read the instruction and count the balloons of the right colour. Choose the right answer among the proposals shown once animation ended.
  • Le poème perdu (only in French version): Training your brain by completing the poem. Read poem and try to remember details. Find all the lost words among proposals and fill in the corresponding blank.

Coco - Educational Games 2019 provides a fun and easy to use interactive experience. The graphics are clear and easy to follow. Parents and teachers will be pleased to know that the child can use the application unsupported after the initial instructions. The app may benefit from audio instructions for those children who struggle with reading. The games are very diverse and offer several exciting features and levels. We particularly like how you can track your child’s performance and the application will improve your child’s concentration and reinforce their mental health. This application is a good application and comes recommended by The EducationalAppStore.com
