    Hooked on Phonics is digital reading program based on the phonics learn to read system. It promotes reading development and is suitable for children 3-7.  Early learners enjoy songs, games, and interactive lessons in this literacy app that teaches print concepts, phonological awareness and phonics word recognition. Hooked on Phonics is available to download for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android devices and for desktop computers (Windows and Mac)

    This is a subscription based app containing a large amount of content with a variety of different ways to help young people learn to read. The app works through the whole process of learning to read, in great detail, through phonics using storytelling, interactive graphics, instructional videos and live action teaching. There is a lot of fun within the app, which will certainly keep users returning. There is an ongoing cost of $9.99 monthly after receiving the first 2 weeks for free.

    Using ABC Phonics, children can learn about letters and the alphabet and play games. It has 26 educational games to learn phonics and your first ABCs. Children can learn new words and their phonic sounds in this Phonic Matching game for Preschool and Kindergarten.

    The app is at aimed those young people on their way to becoming readers by strengthening their understanding of over 90 common phonic sounds and through over 1800 different practice words enhancing decoding skills. Utilising a number of strong features including storytelling the app personalises the learning of the individual to maximise the learning outcomes of the young person using the app. This app is best used for young people with a reading age of around 6-9 and could be used for older EAL pupils. The main aim of the app is help shorten the time that it takes for a young person to become an independent reader.

    My Phonics Kit is an excellent educational app for young children learning how to read. The app itself is linked to extremely popular and well used Biff, Chip and Kipper books which are part of the Oxford Owl series of books from Oxford University Press. Through a series of different fun and interactive games the user becomes more proficient in their reading abilities and this in turn helps with young children’s spelling ability too. There are also added features such as being able to print off progress certificates that enhance the app.

    An app that focusses on helping young children to learn how to read through game-like activities that aim to keep the young person engaged in learning. The app does not teach memorisation but puts a focus on the ability of the young person to learn the patterns and sounds of letters and therefore build their comprehension in reading.

    Linked to the extremely popular and well used Oxford Reading Tree, Therapy Box (the developer of the app) have teamed up with OUP (home of the Oxford Reading Tree) to create an excellent addition to the Biff, Chip and Kipper series. The app is not only a dictionary of words but also contains within it the ability to test users on their spellings, create specific spelling lists and help young children continue to learn to read through synthetic phonics.

    Mr Thorne's Phonics Flash Cards - A very comprehensive set of flash cards is included in this app, broken down to match the way phonics is taught in schools.  Each one pronounces the sounds and the word as a whole.   Teachers can use it to teach and children can use it to learn independently.

    Mr Thorne's Phonics Safari consists of eight levels, each covering a different group of letter sounds, and four different game types for each of these levels in this app.  The games are quick to play, each featuring nine questions.  Children attempt to answer as many questions as possible to reveal the hidden animals.

    Jolly Phonics is an app at helping young children in the initial stages of learning to read with phonics. With beautifully drawn scenes to display the learning content, this app will attract children to engage with it. Children learn about a group of letter sounds at a time.  They learn to form the letters, what sounds they make, and some of the words that they are used in. Jolly Phonics download is available for iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android devices as well as on desktop (PCs, laptops and Mac computers).

    Phonics Match is a colourful and fun matching game that can help children associate letters with sounds. It supports the Jolly Phonics system and has been developed to help young children blend and segment words by learning the 42 sounds of the English language.

    Montessori Words and Phonics is a simple-to-use app based on the Montessori learning method that can help children develop reading, writing and spelling skills. The app helps children understand that words are made up of sounds and helps them memorise the phonics associated with letters. The app has 3 levels of difficulty that cover basic CVC words and more complex words with long vowel sounds and blends.

    Phonics Read CVC 100 Words is a fun app that can help children learn to read short words using phonics. Children can tap the bubble to hear how the letter sounds, read the word and then select the appropriate image that matches it. 100 common CVC words are covered by this app.

    BlackBeards’s Alphabet, by Unit11, is an educational game for preschoolers that will help them learn the alphabet, the letter sounds and even practice writing. It is a fun and engaging learning game that, because of the pirate theme, we feel it might appeal more to boys.  The app allows young learners to personalise their experience by giving them the option to choose the representative words for each letter. BlackBeards’s Alphabet is a great tool for learning the alphabet and receives a 5 star EAS Certification.

    Phonics Reading Kindergarten 1 consists of 5 mini games that can help children learn to read and spell.  The app covers Montessori phonics, beginning sounds, ending sounds, short vowels and sight words to develop children’s reading skills. The app is designed specifically for pre-readers and beginner readers.

Learners will have to explore the islands and find the clues that will help them to find their treasure. Overall the app receives a 5 star rating and the EAS Recommended status.
