Grade 1 Common Core maths is a fun and engaging app that children can use to develop and practise their mathematical skills. It consists of numerous interactive exercises to provide children with plenty of practice and adapts to the level of the child. It covers lots of different topics and is suitable for use with Key Stages 1 and 2.

Key Stage 2 (KS2) Maths Years 3/4 is structured like a workbook and provides children with lots of opportunities to practise key maths skills. Although the app’s name suggests it is aimed at Years 3 & 4, it also covers some objectives from Key Stage 1.

Operation Math is a fun and engaging app that can help children practise drills related to the 4 number operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children must help to defeat Dr. Odd by completing timed missions at 3 different levels. There is also a training mode where children can practise answering questions and gain confidence in the skill. Children are rewarded with watches and uniforms to motivate them to keep playing.

Squeebles Times Tables is a beautifully designed app, which helps students practice their times tables in the most fun and interactive way possible. Children learn whilst helping Whizz rescue the Squeebles from the clutches of the nasty maths monster. There are six different game modes for children to practice their times tables on with a number of characters and rewards available to encourage children to improve their scores. Teachers and parents can also monitor a player’s progress and can view a list of tables children have previously got wrong to assist with ongoing learning.

Cyberchase Shape Quest is a free app from the PBS network in America and is related to one of their animated series.  The series follows a group of children who help “Mother Board” protect cyber space from “The Hacker”.  The game, however is only loosely related to this narrative but instead focuses on understanding of shape and angles.  The app consists of three games that each cover different areas of shape and angle and is suitable for a range of abilities. The games begin at quite an easy level but progresses to some quite challenging concepts and skills.  The first of the three is an engaging augmented reality game where children need to use a range of shapes to patch holes in a path.  There is also a hide and seek game that tests children’s understanding of shape names and their properties. The final game could be used to look at angles but seem to have less direct educational value than the first two.

Monkey Preschool Fix-It is a fun, simple to use app that will appeal to young children between the ages of 2 and 5. It consists of 6 mini games that can help teach children about colours, numbers, letters, shapes, patterns and solving puzzles. Children are rewarded throughout the game with stickers, which motivate them to keep on playing.

Test your machine building skills using logic and reasoning and an array of unusual objects in this engaging game. Students help Pettson build inventions by working out which objects should be included and where they should be placed in the machine. They are rewarded with cog wheels for each invention that they finish and unlock. This app is suitable for use in both Key Stages 1 and 2.

Algebra can be a source of considerable confusion and negative attitudes among students. Nothing strikes fear more than algebra and teachers nowadays turn lessons into games and challenges just to spark interest. But Dr. Henry Borenson made algebra a child’s play with the ‘Hands-On Equations’ approach. The method has transferred to the digital age and is available on both iOS and Android devices and we have to say that it is a very useful app for both teachers and students. We highly recommended it and the app receives a 5 star EAS rating.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is a fun, simple to use app. It consists of 5 mini educational games, for children aged 2 to 5. The games can help children learn about colours, letters, counting, differences, and matching. Children must help the monkey to complete the activities, which are presented in a cyclical manner to promote repetition and reinforcement. They are rewarded throughout the game with stickers, which motivate them to keep on playing.

Clear and easy to use Math Workout Pro will strengthen maths skills by testing a wide variety of topics. It can be used to help children develop their mental maths skills across the four number operations. It has 6 modes to provide children with plenty of practice and has 3 levels of difficulty. It is suitable for use in both Key Stages 1 and 2. Great for introducing the element of timed tests that children will experience at school. Reports on progress makes this a really useful app.

Maths Monkey’s Quest is a fun game designed to support children in recalling and applying maths knowledge and applying skills.  A range of topics are covered including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percentages. There are four levels of difficulty in the game making it suitable for a range of abilities.

Heavy or Light is an easy-to-use, visually appealing game, which helps children learn about weight. There are three game modes, which allow children to identify which object out of a pair is the heaviest, guess the weight of an object and compare objects in terms of weight against others.

Mathemagica: Math School is a clearly structured app, which provides children with lots of maths practice across many different curriculum areas.  There is a ‘Practice’ mode where children can practise specific skills, and a ‘Marathon’ mode where children work their way through a range of questions. The app is responsive to the needs of the student and adapts accordingly, providing extra practice in weak areas. The areas covered by the app include numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, money, time and percentages.

Kids Jigsaw Puzzles Farm HD is a collection of jigsaw puzzles, which can help children develop logic and vocabulary skills.  It includes 45 jigsaw puzzles set in 7 different colourful farm scenes. It has 5 levels of difficulty, ranging from 2 pieces to 16 pieces making it suitable for beginners and experienced puzzle solvers.

The classic children’s role-play game, “Shopkeepers”, is turned into a counting game that teaches children about addition. The cute characters and variety of goodies that you can buy will keep children entertained. The app has three difficulty levels and levels within each level. There are never ending questions to keep the learning process going. Our reviewers would have liked even more variety within the app in order to further engagement. Therefore, this app is more of a workbook with a series of questions that the user must answer. It is like a textbook with lots of exercises to keep going. So, if that’s what you are looking for, this is your app! If you want an app that is going to entertain and also explain lots of concepts, this is not your app. Despite this caveat, the app is of good quality and has received a 4 Star EAS Certification.

This a fantastic app to get your children acquainted with letters, words and writing out the alphabet. It follows a world of make-believe where you the learner has a magic wand (his/her finger) which can cast “spells” or, in this case more literally, to actually spell. Your child will learn letters, vocabulary words and the idea of using a dictionary to organise letters and words. The app has received top marks from our reviewers and has achieved an EAS 5 Star rating and recommended status.

Toddler Sing and Play 2 is a fun, interactive collection of rhymes for children to explore and enjoy. The app includes: Old MacDonald had a Farm, Five Little Ducks, Five Little Speckled Frogs and Mary had a Little Lamb.

2x2-4 by Aplemakh Bros is a simple app aimed at improving two kinds of arithmetic operations: multiplication and division. With built-in multiplication tables and a maths game similar to pirate ship battle games, the app will for sure prove a hit with the kids. Games can be personalized and set to focus only on a certain range of derived equations and this is helpful if you identify what the areas are where your child needs a little bit more practice. The app received a 4 star EAS Certification, and what’s more educational institutions can download it at a discounted rate.
