DimDon world map is a beautifully presented app aimed at students between the ages of 5-8 years of age. The app has two game modes, one for world maps and the other for animals. We recommend using the world map section as this seems to provide the best feedback. Both play modes offer the student a 3D map where they either have to map the country to the globe as a jigsaw piece or match the country and the animal to the globe. The graphics are excellent and the students can zoom in and rotate the globe with ease. A timer is set to see of the globe can be filled with the countries and oceans. You can practice and record your quickest time. Although this app is initially in Spanish the app can be translated into English at a touch of a button. There are also some nice features where the app can be shared, languages can be changed and a help function can be called upon.

Mental Maths has been downloaded over a million times, is still being used in schools today and has frequently been featured by Apple in the education section of the App Store. Geo Walk HD app is an educational app loaded with useful information about 500 people, places, plants, and animals.   The information is presented in two modes as an interactive globe and photo library. Offering a rich sampling of information, the app lets students approach the content in a self-directed way. Quizzes offer a fun way to test retention.   Users spin an interactive globe that's covered with small thumbnail pictures (which turn out to be flashcards). When they tap one, they'll see an image indicating one of the game's four categories -- animals and plants, history, people, and inventions. Tap the picture and an informational paragraph gives details in a short, digestible form. The other way to view the information is by viewing the cards, which appear in a circular scrolling manner.   Since the information included on each card is brief, this app is a great source to use as an idea generator for research topics. Categories can be deselected, too, so you could make available only the options you want your students to explore (places or events, for example).

Smudge Compass and direction is a simple app and one of the few apps that teach students compass points and directions. The app is well presented and has simple functions and instructions. There are two modes of play: Enabling students to move Smudge to a given compass and asking where Cecily has gone from. Both modes of play have basic compass points and advanced compass points to create 3 levels of differentiation. Each time the players score can be recorded and retained. Although this is a simple app it really does but across the teaching of compass points and directions in a fun and informative way. Sometimes simple is best.

GeoBee Challenge by National Geographic is one of our favourite geography apps. It is not an app for beginners and even though the app is aimed at kids age 9 to 13 some of the tests could be really challenging even for the geography enthusiasts. Kids can use it as an assessment tool used to test their knowledge of world geography and to identify locations on a world map. The only critique is that during our review the app stopped unexpectedly twice and needs an update that will remove discontinued features like Open Feint. The app may inspire children to compete in the real life competition and receives a 4 star EAS Certification.
