What we love about BrainPOP Jr.

BrainPOP Jr. guides children through subject areas with the assistance of Moby the robot and Annie the young school child. Annie’s character is cool calm and collected- the ideal role model. Her good natured tone will make it easy for your children to sympathises with her thoughts and ideas and in turn respect and value the information she is passing on.

The content of BrainPOP Jr. is similar to BrainPOP e.g Sciences, Math, English, Social studies (and many more) however the way the content is delivered has been simplified. The pace of annotation from Mia is much slower, making it easier for younger children to follow, and they incorporation of a virtual notepad which picks out the key ideas serves the purpose as a reminder to the user what they key learning is at that point in time. BrainPOPjr does not contain the more explicit content such as terrorism or sexual education but does contain one video in regards to illegal drugs, however it is presented in a factual frank way that should not deter parents. The copy is obviously composed for an American market as it uses words such as “recess” which other nationalities may not be familiar with so it might be nice to see the content appropriated for multi nationalities.

Is BrainPOP Jr. easy to use?

The test function of BrainPOP Jr. is brilliant as it features two levels of difficulty making a consideration for different levels of progression within age groups. The quizzes are shortened to five questions to accommodate for potentially shorter concentration spans, however the incorporation of two test levels ensures that there is the same total content.

BrainPOP Jr. interface layout is very simple to use, with a modular magazine style layout. The colour palate used throughout the interface covers a range of primary based colours to easily differentiate between buttons and menus options. The styling of the icons are very literal translations of the metaphors they represent making it easier for younger audiences to understand the function of each button. The text is very clear and easy to read in the display menus and the text in the narrated stories is clear to follow for already competent readers. It could be beneficial for those users who are still learning to read to have some way of following along with the word that is being spoken such as a visual pace maker.

We found the classifying Animals video pretty valuable information, which is presented in a rational way that children will adopt and take on board. This topic was particularly of interest to us as it presented some complicated ideas in a logical methodological way. Annie teaches the difference between mammals, amphibians and reptiles and also the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, and how to identify these animals.

How much does BrainPOP Jr. cost?

BrainPOP Jr. is full of accurate content accompanied by beautifully illustrated videos and for this reason is awarded 5 star EAS certification.
