Booka - Childrens Books Review
What is BOOKA app?
BOOKA is an app that contains a wide range of Ebooks to aid learning through reading as well as encouraging a love of reading from an early age. The app organises books in a sensible way allowing users to select books based on age range or topic.
Being an Ebook app it could be forgiven for just holding a supply of books for users to browse and read however Booka goes a step further in selecting books and organising them in a way that encourages reading for enjoyment as well as reading to learn, something important at the age that they have pitched the app at. The purpose of this being to encourage a love of learning, especially through reading at an early age. The books that appear in the app have been specifically chosen to be fun and interactive and come from top children’s book publishers so the art work and the content of the books are the best that are currently on the market.
Books and topics that are included in the app, range from some of the basics of language such as learning first words, letters, shapes and colours through to learning about the natural world that is around us. There are also books that focus on using your imagination and creativity as well as developing logical thinking. The app also contains the option for the book to be read aloud allowing users to access reading in a number of different ways. This works well for all the age ranges that the app is focussed on as it means younger users, who are unable to read can use this function and even older users who can read can pick this option to help them with their reading, especially with difficult words.
The whole look of the interface and the accessibility in the app makes it incredibly user friendly, with no features that detract from learning only enhance both the learning and pleasure aspects. The app also helps users to find appropriate books with a search and filter function that can show age ranges of titles as well relevant topics. All of this makes the app a pleasure to use in instilling a love of reading and learning in the youngest of users.
What we love about Booka
There are a number of really excellent aspects within the app however the thing that struck me the most was the amount of content that was available in the app. There are so many books of such a high quality that you could spend a long time reading on the app and never reading the same book twice. The books come from top children’s publishers too so not only are the books very well written the illustrations in all the books are excellent too.
What skills does it improve?
Booka aims to improve a number of different skills. The most obvious one is reading ability of the users as it encourages them to read and can support reading through the ‘read to me’ function. However, the app contains books on a range of topics that also hope to teach young children about the world around them as well as basic things such as first letters, colours etc.
What age is it website and appropriate for?
BOOKA app is aimed at users from 0-8. The younger users can access the app with the parents, as can the older users however they can also access the app themselves without any parental support.
Is BOOKA easy to use?
For the user the app is incredibly easy to use and access.
How will students benefit?
Students will benefit from being able to access an app that will build their confidence when it comes to reading and help them to build a love of reading too. With such a wide range of topics also covered through the books in the app the user will also be able to learn about a wide variety of things.
How will teachers benefit?
Teachers will benefit from students working their way through the learning aspect of the app, via reading, as well as being able to access reading in a guided and supported way. Although the app starts off at pre school age, teachers from KS1 will be able to access a wide range of excellent books to engage reading too.
How will parents benefit?
There are many benefits for parents. They will be able to read with their child as well as reading to them (at any of the ages). They can feel supporting in helping to teach their child about certain topics through the range of books available and they can also utilise features such as the ‘read to me’ aspects in the app to have their child listen to stories being read to them by someone else.
How much does BOOKA cost?
BOOKA has a range of subscription charges to allow access to the titles within the app. However, there is also a free 7 day subscription so users can try the app before they purchase a subscription.
What is included with the free version vs. paid?
The 7 day trial allows access to the app but for a limited period.
Is BOOKA safe to use
BOOKA website and app content is completely child-friendly and contains no content that could be considered in the website and appropriate or unsafe for children.
What BOOKA can improve on?
There are very little things I can think of that would improve the app. The accessibility is fantastic and the aims of the app are met extremely well. I would just urge them to continue adding more titles as and when they can and growing the app as much as possible.
Overall rating of the website and app
BOOKA website and app has received a 5 star EAS rating and this is due to the premise of the app and the learning within it.
