ASL POCKET SIGN is an app that has been designed to help users learn American sign language or ASL. The app has been created to help users learn, and become more proficient in using ASL so they can communicate with others who use it if they are deaf or if they need to learn how to teach someone else who is deaf to use ASL. Likewise the app could be used by someone who is already deaf and wants to learn ASL so that they are able to communicate with others too.
Through a series of activities the app introduces learners to small, bitesize chunks of learning, hoping to not overload them and keeping it very simple. There are a large number of video tutorials in the app that show someone using ASL correctly with a picture helping to make the link between the ASL and the meaning. This allows the users the ability to tether what they are seeing in the video to something tangible that they will already know, thus helping them to remember the ASL more.
The app allows users to check their understanding through a series or study tests that aim to compound the learning they have worked through. There is a vast amount of content in the app too which is split into different lessons such as food, emotions, play and responses all topics that any learner of ASL will need to help them communicate with other users ASL.
There are a number of other different aspects in the app too such as a searchable dictionary which shows you a video of your search term. You can also share this through your device with someone else should you wish to. The app also gives a page of the alphabet should you need this for reference and to encourage learning and returning to the app your progress earns you different ‘treasures’ along the way.

The aim is to help them become proficient so that they are able to communicate with other users of ASL or to be able to teach someone else how to use and communicate with ASL.
What we love about ASL POCKET SIGN
There are a number of really good aspects within the app but the thing I like the best has to be the actual content and learning within the app. There are so many video tutorials showing so many aspects of ASL that you really wouldn’t be stuck for any learning at all. These are all in bitesize chunks too so as a user you really like you are progressing and not being overloaded with anything too difficult.

ASL POCKET SIGN app improves users’ confidence in ASL as well as their abilities in being able to use it to communicate with others.
What age is it appropriate for?
ASL POCKET SIGN app, I would suggest is aimed at everyone who has the ability to be able to read instructions from children through to adults.

Students will benefit from being able to access an app that will build their confidence when it comes to using ASL and being to communicate with it.

There are many benefits for parents too some of which will be similar to teachers’ in the way that they can personalise any learning in the app, however for parents it could also be useful for them to use alongside their child in learning ASL so they can do it together or just as a parent using it so they can communicate with a child who uses ASL.

There are a couple of aspects that I think would really be beneficial to improve upon in the app. I think firstly, although it is app related is to have a dedicated website with ways in which the app can be used, how to contact the developers and that has useful information on it. I would also suggest building in some way to allow users a practice test feature so they can see how well they are progressing and what they are retaining.
