ArithmeType Math Keyboard Review

Math has always been a challenge for apps and other software. In many ways, using technology to learn and experiment with math is a perfect match, but the many symbols and format conventions of math make it an often unintuitive activity.

The ArithmeType app builds upon the success of a dedicated hardware keyboard to bring similar benefits to users of mobile devices. It is an iOS replacement keyboard dedicated to math which makes it much easier to demonstrate math knowledge in, for example, a homework assignment. ArithmeType's design reveals its origins as a support for students with learning challenges but also makes it a convenient tool for any math student.

ArithmeType Math Keyboard Features

  • Comprehensive coverage of math symbols from basic arithmetic operations to advanced math
  • High compatibility - works with any app or website that allows you to use your device's keyboard
  • High-contrast design for accessibility and clarity
  • One-off purchase - no subscriptions

Cost

ArithmeType only requires a single purchase, but there is no free trial. There are no subscriptions or further in-app purchases. It is compatible with Family Sharing to provide extra value.

Is it good for learning?

ArithmeType concerns itself with accessibility and intuitiveness in math rather than providing teaching and learning material. It makes it easier to enter math symbols into web and app-based text fields, such as used for typing up assignments or making notes. We tested it with apps built into iOS devices and third-party apps such as Noteshelf 3, which it complimented well.

For many apps a math student may already own, Artithmetype feels like the missing feature that lets them shine.

Artithmetype cannot replace a keyboard that is built into an app.

Benefits for Students

The ease of use and convenience are the same for all users of ArithmeType, but there are some additional ways that the app's features become beneficial to teachers:

It makes entering math into an app shown on a shared screen much easier. Juggling class control, lesson structure, and the math itself is a heavy cognitive load and having ArithmeType make typing much easier eases this burden on teachers.

When the keyboard uses pop-ups, it clusters associated functions together, making for useful opportunities to teach about similarities and differences between them.

Having ArithmeType on all school devices also prevents teachers' lessons from being derailed by a learner unable to cope practically or emotionally with the difficulty of entering math symbols. It is a simple way to improve accessibility and one we recommend.

The Cons of using ArithmeType Math Keyboard

ArithmeType's default colour scheme is perfect as it is high contrast and should not pose a problem for anyone with colour-vision difficulties. It makes sense to keep this as the default option. However, as this app also has many benefits for those who do not need such accessibility, we'd like to see an alternate scheme that offers a subtler visual feel.

Final Verdict: ArithmeType Math Keyboard Review

ArithmeType feels like a big upgrade to an Apple device’s keyboard for math students. Working on math projects and assignments feels much more fluid when you can find the desired symbols in logical places without having to go through multiple clicks and screen changes. We have awarded the ArithmeType app five stars for all students, but it might be worth even more to neurodivergent students or those with motor difficulties.
