Versatile is one word to describe the ABCya learning games included in this app. They work across every mainstream device, they cover multiple educational topics, and deliver a broad range of game styles to test and develop children's learning. Excellent would be another word. Games are also available on mobile devices with the subscription.

ABCya Review

What's it about?

ABCya is the leader in educational games for children. All educational games are free and are modeled from primary grade lessons and enhanced to provide an interactive way for children to learn. ABCya has created more than 400 educational computer games and apps for students in reception to year 7. In addition to a focus on maths and English, ABCya also covers topics such as science and holiday trivia and provides fun activities to help children improve typing skills and even create animations.

Is it any good?

Don't be fooled by the name, ABCya is not limited to alphabet games. It contains an absolute trove of high-quality learning games across many different topics and in many different styles. Whatever device you own, you can almost certainly find a way to play them on that device and help your child to learn and improve.

As a whole, the content is categorised in a number of different ways and is easy to browse and search for a specific type, challenge, or topic to practise. The app is structured around the U.S. Common Core Curriculum and so the games can be chosen by grade level and then by a general category such as letters, numbers, strategy, skill, or holiday. The ‘Holiday” section includes games that celebrate Christmas and New Years, and also many of the popular US holidays such as Thanksgiving and Independence Day.  ‘Skill’ games reinforce lessons such as typing and pattern recognition, while ‘Strategy’ games are meant to encourage pure fun, and require quick reactions and a good sense of timing.

The Common Core Curriculum structure should not put off parents or educators whose children do not follow this curriculum, as ABCya covers fundamental PreK-6th grade skills that are universally appropriate.  For example, though each numeracy and literacy game is aligned to the US Common Core Curriculum, these games are nevertheless easily understandable and simple to translate into the objectives of other curricula.

Each activity is made to a high standard and new ones are continually being added to the game library. They tend to be based around a single gameplay mechanism, are easy to learn, and concentrate on a narrow topic, so they can be targeted at the skills each child needs to cover. The numeracy and literacy games, in particular, are well focused and educationally relevant while also being more fun for children than textbook exercises and worksheets.

Although the majority of the titles in ABCya focus on traditional math and literacy games, a few are what teachers would describe as manipulatives. “Base Ten Blocks,” for example, does not include gameplay rules, but is an interactive activity that encourages students to explore number patterns.  These can be very useful for explaining mathematical concepts to children, as they provide a virtual form of the physical number blocks often used in the classroom. Since the virtual manipulatives have a different use from the other activities included on ABCya, it would have been nice to be able to sort and search for manipulatives as a distinct category. As it stands, these activities are mixed in with the other content.

The graphics and sound are all very well done: everything is clear and colourful, music accompanies many games, and clear sound effects enhance the experience. The objectives of many of the games are explained by text which might mean that a few children could need some adult help to understand what they need to do. But, in most cases, the game is self-explanatory and can be understood by just having a go.

This is a subscription service but with a generous twist: the content is freely accessible if you access it over the web on a desktop machine, albeit it is framed by advertisements. This gives you, or rather your child, time to use and experience the games so that you can make the right choice about taking out the full subscription.

To get an advertisement-free experience and use the content on a mobile device, you can download the free app and take out a subscription. This gets you a number of other quality of life benefits such as being able to store more games as favourites rather than having to seek them out among the masses and allows an ad-free experience on desktop.

There are many apps offering a learning experience based around mini-games, but few offer such a broad array of content that can be accessed across a plethora of devices. Your first action after reading this review should be to check out the content for yourself on a desktop PC - you will see for yourself what a well-produced service ABCya provides and how useful it would be to extend this to your mobile devices.
