Teacher Review

Kids Phonics Learning to Read Program for Children includes letter names, Single letter sounds, Sounding out simple words, Word Families and Short and long vowel sounds.

This is a general guide on how to progressively teach your child to learn to read. However, mindful of the fact that every child is different, you can always adapt the program according to your child's unique needs. You will find links to Phonics Worksheets, Phonics Videos, Phonics Games Online & Listening Materials, which have all been designed to help your child learn to read. It is suitable for school teachers and home-school parents. If you are simply looking for extra resources, then use the search tool above to help you quickly find your way around.

To become skilled readers, children must have strong base in phonics, or an understanding of the sounds of printed letters and words.  Children will use phonics when learning how to blend sounds together to read words. Since several areas of the brain must work together to “decode” or sound out words, children must practice this skill repeatedly. Your child will also use phonics to spell words when they write.

Preschool Phonics - Ages 3-4

Learning to read starts here. From as low as 3 years, your child needs to build the following skills that will prepare him/her for reading. The first step in phonics is to learn the names of the letters of the alphabet, both in their lowercase and uppercase forms. Children will learn the alphabet through hundreds of books, games, songs, puzzles, and art activities, and will see and hear examples of many words that start with each letter.

Pre-K children who have phonemic awareness can tell you the sounds they hear in the beginning of words.

Phonemic awareness can and should be directly taught to children. Parents can be the best teachers by singing with their kids, rhyming words and asking them the sounds they hear in different words.

Kindergarten Phonics - Ages 4-6

In Kindergarten your child will start by being able to read CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words) such as  t-a-p. Your child will begin trying to sound out each letter sound to blend into a word. They will begin to spell words. Children will learn short vowels a & e, beginning and ending consonant sounds. Children will learn short vowels i, o & u, ending and beginning consonants & digraphs. The will learn how to read words, sentences and 2 short stories.

First Grade Phonics - Ages 6-7

The 1st Grade Phonics features a review of all the short vowels, beginning and ending consonants.

In 1st grade your child will start by being able to read CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words) like t-a-p, then move on to read words that start with bl, sl, and tr. They’ll learn that the letter “e” at the end of some words will be silent (gone, time). They’ll also master long vowel sounds such as ai, ee, oa. Your child will be sounding out and trying to read two-syllable words (like wagon) as well as words that don’t follow regular spelling rules (said, busy, tongue).

Second Grade Phonics - Ages 7-8

In 2nd grade children are expected to read longer, more complex words and words that are not spelled how they sound.

The 2nd Grade Phonics features the long o & u with the silent e. This level also includes vowel digraphs like oa & ow, ui & ue and final y as long i. Special vowels like aw & ew will be also be learned. Children need a lot of practice reading to reinforce phonics skills, so make a point to listen to them read every day.

Use phonics games to help build kids’  “decoding” or sounding out skills. This will make your child a stronger and faster reader.
