Teacher Review

The Train Your Brain – English Comprehension app covers a great deal. Initially in the free version you get a complete comprehension paper and 8 tests relating to it. These cover spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and a mock tests where all the skills are combined in an accurate example of an 11+ comprehension paper.
If the app has proved useful and progress has been made, parents can choose to download the full version which includes 11 further papers (each with 8 tests). This is plenty for entrance exam practice.
The text can be printed out, so that children can have it alongside them when they are answering the questions. The lines of the text are numbered (as they usually are in the entrance exam) to help children quickly identify the right parts of the text needed to answer the questions. A good skill to practice.
By taking the skills required one by one, children should feel less over whelmed by what is required of them. Parents can quickly identify the areas where a child may be struggling and offer further support on these.
The pie charts showing progress are useful. Parents can also add more time per question (if required) in the settings. Unlike other apps the texts are standard English and very similar to examples from entrance exams. Texts can be made larger by pinching.
Although not fancy, this app covers all the skills needed to do well at Comprehension. Children will need support when using it, or feedback after they have completed the mock test to see where time can be used best in revision.

From the Developer

This app consists of English comprehension, questions based on Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling mistakes.

On the completion of each test the user is given a summary of questions answered correctly, incorrectly and skipped along with the time taken on each question. Every question can be reviewed and all questions have an explanation of the answer.

An interactive pie chart displays current progress for each topic. You can touch the different color slices of the pie and choose if you wish to answer only incorrectly answered questions, unattempted or correctly answered questions. This feature is very useful to achieve 100% score in each topic.

After you have practiced all types of questions, you can take a Mock Test with 50 questions. The Mock Test has questions selected randomly from each topic. Scores for the mock tests taken in the past are displayed in a bar chart. This is a great way to track how you are progressing in mock tests. There is no limit on how many mock tests you can take.

• 600 multiple-choice questions.
• Explanation with every question.
• Option to choose the number of questions to test.
• Option to choose if user wants instant feedback on answer selection.
