The husband and wife team producing these apps have created a series of lovely tools that will really help kids to become more “naturally” mathematical. The learning outcomes are set out very clearly in each app so that parents/teachers can guide kids with the mathematical concepts as they use the apps. They are fantastic resources and we have given them an EAS Certification of 5 Stars and EAS Recommended Status.
Wow. This is a fantastic app! This app really demonstrates to kids how maths is all about logical thinking. Even we were hooked into getting the right answers and kept wanting to play in order to get it right in the fastest time possible!
The aim of the game is to guess the numbers on the left hand table. These are called the “secret numbers”. There are three levels so learners begin having to guess four secret numbers and then progress on to six. Sounds simple enough however, you are challenged to say the numbers in their totality: i.e one hundred thousand, five hundred and twenty-seven rather than looking at the individual digits that make up the number. As you enter the numbers, the traffic light colours give you a clue as to how close you are with your choice of numbers.
The learner’s use and development of logical thinking becomes apparent in the cues that they take from the traffic light colours of the numbers. Red means that the number is nowhere near the correct number, amber means that it is the correct number however, it is in the incorrect place of the secret overall number. Green means that it is the right digit and that it is in the right place.
This is a great game to play in the classroom in order to get kids warmed up with their thinking caps. It gets them a little competitive and gets them focused. It is so simple, so intuitive and yet, the kids are undertaking abstract numerical thinking. We want more of these, please!
From the Developer
The Traffic Lights game is a great way to give your child an understanding of place value at the same time as helping them to develop logical thinking.
The iPad chooses a secret number and the player has only six guesses to find it. The Traffic Light clues show that the guess has:
GREEN: The right digit in the right place of the secret number
ORANGE: The right digit, but in the wrong place of the secret number
RED: The wrong digit and so not anywhere in the secret number
There are three levels, using 4-digit, 5-digit and 6-digit secret numbers. Just as you feel safe at one level, it’s time to go on to the next.
