Often it is assumed that children understand what they have read. For many children it is a skill to learn and this is why it is included in the 11+. The Reading Comprehension app uses examples of text, listed by the year group they are most suited to and provides examples of fiction and non-fiction to develop comprehension skills. Although an American App we found the range of texts provided (even in the free version) to be of a high standard.

Possibly the best way to use this app is to work through from the more basic texts (year3, 8 to 9 year olds) to the more advanced (year 5, 10 to 11 year olds) which, when completed will put the child in good stead for the entrance exams.

Teacher Review

Comprehension skills are difficult to master for some children. The best way to develop it is to read a lot and discuss texts afterwards as this develops understanding and interest. Apps have a role too in providing a wider range of types of texts for children to access.

Having the text next to the questions is a real bonus of this app. Many other Comprehension apps require children to read a text then to remember it in order to answer the questions, or to click forwards and backwards which means children lose their place. Here the questions remain while the child scrolls through the app to find the answer.

When an answer is selected the appropriate area of the text is hi-lighted to show where the answer was, again very useful.

Although the spelling and vocabulary are American, the tone of the texts are good and there is enough to stretch even advanced readers. No texts are too long, meaning that children can complete a daily practice without it being too time consuming. It would have been good to have included a ‘tap the word if you don’t understand it’ feature but sadly, it is not included in this app.

The full version of the app allows much better monitoring of progress. Here also you can make the texts larger which will make it more accessible. The black text on white background is a little hard on the eye but as this is the format of entrance exams, it is standard. The full version also has more fiction and non-fiction passages for further practice.

Overall, this is a basic but useful app in preparing children for the 11+ exam.

User feedback:
"I like how it highlights where the answer was in the passage when you pick your answer." - Kami Butterfield, teacher

"The selections are age appropriate and the responses to the questions are not too easy - some thought needs to go into it." - Mary Skummer, teacher

"The feature showing where the answer is located in the passage is a spot on tool since I ask my students to be able to provide this in their oral and written responses." - Harold Nelson, teacher

"Great for reading practice - I would highly recommend it."

"These apps are awesome! Our boys absolutely love these. We have done 3rd, 4th & 5th grade comprehension. They love the fun aspect of getting the questions right, and think of these more as games than the learning apps they are."
