This app has been developed as a tool for readers to either choose to have a book read to them at a speed they wish or to read a book themselves or to do both at the same time. As the book is read out, by a real human voice and not an automated voice, the words are highlighted at the correct time allowing the reader to read along with the audio if they so wish.

Teacher Review

This is a good app that has been created to allow users the option or accessing a book in a number of different ways. For instance they could simply choose the read a book from the selection within the app. Or they might wish for the app to read the book aloud to them. If a user were to choose this option they have the ability to choose the speed of reading to match it best to their own needs or level. Also in this option the user can see the words that are being read highlighted on the screen so they also have the option of reading alongside the audio. This can be used for a number of different readers, for example those people who aren’t quite as confident at reading may wish to use this option to help them became more proficient in both reading and the English language for instance maybe someone who has English as an additional language.

Currently there are 21 English novels on the app and then a further 2 French novels. The books themselves are what you would title as ‘classic’ texts including things such as Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Wizard of Oz etc. Due to the interest levels of the texts and their difficulties I would suggest that this is currently aimed towards older readers who are looking to further improve their language abilities as well as being able to access texts that are maybe a little above their abilities but with the added features of audio within the app allows them to read the texts with support. Also linked to this support is the option for the user to select a word that they do not know and have the app look up the word in the dictionary to give a definition and therefore a better understanding. These small features go a long way in the app to supporting users should they require it. The developers do make it clear that there are other titles that will be added soon so this may include texts aimed at younger users.

The app itself is subscription based so although you get access to the first chapter of all the books, a good way to see if you like the book before you download it, you do need to purchase a subscription to access all the content. At the moment the fees are either £2.99 on a monthly basis or £1 a month if you take out a yearly subscription. Outside of these charges the app also offers users the option to watch an advert to receive free access for one day.

One of the key features I enjoyed about the app was the fact that the audio is read by a real person and is not an automated voice. There are many apps on the market that use an automated voice and this does jar sometimes when listening to it. However, with a natural human voice it has all the appealing elements of an audio book. The developers have also allowed it so that the audio can be accessed offline and that chapters can be downloaded as and when needed, instead of a whole book at a time to help save space on devices.
