Paintpad is a delightful app that any pre-school child will enthusiastically engage with, any selection of space objects for colouring in is a staple diet for any parent needing to involve their child in a worthwhile activity. The importance of the application is twofold, firstly to engage the child in a learning activity that has educational benefit and secondly for the parent/teacher to monitor the activity of their children and develop a pattern of the progress they are making over a period of time.

Please note, the School/Nursery edition of this app requires a subscription, which includes the Big Clever Learning platform.

Teacher Review

Paintpad is a great application for preschool children with an attractive and brightly coloured interface and an intelligent use of the touch screen interface for the busy, sometimes eclectic child.

The power behind the app lies in the web based management software behind the scenes that capture the activity of the child or group of children within the family or class. As a teacher logs into the ‘my.sherston.com’ website, their attention is intuitively draw to a series of drop down menus to filter through to the particular application that the class has been working on. A useful graph shows the number of sessions of that the class/individual student has engaged in over a period of time, ranging from the last seven days to a year. Drilling further down the page, the statistics for ‘Total sessions’, ‘No. of active pupils’, ‘Average sessions per pupil’, ‘Usage: home/school’, ‘Total duration’, ‘Average session duration’. At the bottom of the screen are displayed two boxes, that show the names of the ‘Most Progress Points Achieved’ and ‘Least Progress Points Achieved’. All of this data is collated and exportable as a PDF document.

The dashboard displays the menu on the left hand side of the screen where a number of other functions can be performed. The ‘Classes’ menu lists the classes the individual teacher has and they have the ability to add or edit the students within each class which also includes a handy ‘CSV’ file import with instructions. Parents can be added so that they can view the progress of their child through the classes, they have a notification option and the teacher can write an introductory email to each parent. The pupil section of the dashboard provides a busy teacher/administrator with all the facilities to assign or delete students as required. Finally, the ‘Apps” section provides the teacher with a list of applications that their organisation has purchased ready to be assigned to the teaching groups.

The management information system is a remarkably intelligent and sophisticated system taking the pain out of collecting the data and presenting figures in a useful OFSTED friendly way, but more importantly allowing the teacher to determine intervention where necessary in a timely manner.

When all said and done, the important bit is whether the application for the child is great. My grandchildren queued up excitedly to use it and had important exchanges about the finer nuances of colouring in! They particularly liked pressing on the letters of the objects they had coloured in, which spoke the phonic sound. The gallery also occupied their time where they could exchange how they liked (or otherwise) each other’s colouring! We all liked it so much we bought it.

This application is the future for the gamification of learning in the modern UK classroom. The app demonstrates both the power of using technology in the classroom by collecting data about the child’s interactions and the intelligent use of the interactive nature of touch screen technology and the careful pacing of difficulty in the objects and colours that are used.

A must for the busy teacher/parent and well worth looking at the other apps available in this range.

From the Developer

Children can travel through the solar system and explore the unseen realms of space with Paintpad. As well as having an amazing time exploring planets and other space objects, they can have fun painting and colouring them.

How it works
Kizzu’s Paintpad Space app, from Sherston Early Years, encourages creativity as children are introduced to a selection of space-themed objects and planets to paint and colour.

Our gentle guide helps children stay within the lines, helping to improve their fine motor skills, while they have fun colouring.

After their drawing is complete, they can watch it zoom off in an animation and a clear voiceover spells out the object's name in phonics for them to learn. The app will then store your child’s beautiful creations for you to look at, share or go back to later.

As well as improving artistic abilities, Paintpad will help build your child’s vocabulary and allow them to explore an exciting new environment.
