My Phonics Kit - Biff, Chip & Kipper
An excellent educational app for young children learning how to read. The app itself is linked to extremely popular and well used Biff, Chip and Kipper books which are part of the Oxford Owl series of books from Oxford University Press. Through a series of different fun and interactive games the user becomes more proficient in their reading abilities and this in turn helps with young children’s spelling ability too. There are also added features such as being able to print off progress certificates that enhance the app.
Linked closely to the Oxford University Press series of books; Biff, Chip and Kipper this app has all the quality you would expect from such an association. Everything from the design in the app to the developer’s website screams quality and with the illustrations the same as the Biff, Chip and Kipper books the user immediately finds themselves in familiar surroundings, something which immediately gives the app a strong sense of value. As mentioned the developer’s website contains a good amount of resources including information on how to get the best out of the app and also includes videos and other resources to help with this. There are also descriptions of each of the games within the app allowing any potential user to see how the app might be used and what areas of reading it can help with.
The gameplay itself in the app is really good which makes it extremely easy to use, however there is a page in the ‘parent’ section of the app that explains how to use it but I would suggest that this will not usually be needed due to accessibility of the app. The usability of the app isn’t the only thing that makes this app simple to use. The design is really well thought out, linking it clearly to the books young people would be familiar with. The Biff, Chip and Kipper books are regularly used in schools to help young children learn to read and the developer has a number of apps utilising the Biff, Chip and Kipper series to help young children extend their classroom learning. This app in particular is a slightly more advanced app and would fit young children already in their journey in learning how to read. Where most phonics app look at the beginning of learning to read with sounds and blends this app is the next step after this where children are already readers but need help in becoming more competent readers.
The main content of the app though is where the real quality lies. As mentioned this app is aimed at those children already readers and geared towards helping them to become more proficient with slightly more advanced games. In total there are five different games that work on slightly different skills. These include sentence building, word to picture matching and sound hunting. Each of the games relies on the user being able to already read but helps to extend their understanding of the English Language by allowing them to practise the skills learnt through phonics and the Biff, Chip and Kipper Books. There is also enough difficulty in the app for my proficient 6 year old to get a lot out of using it and backs up a lot of the learning that she is receiving in the classroom. I can easily see this app being used in the classroom and at home to continue young children’s reading journeys.
The app also offers a couple of different ways to encourage users to continue to play on the app and gives them a bit of a competitive edge by providing them with the option to earn stickers through working on the different games within the app. Alongside being able to print off certificates once certain ‘levels’ have been completed this really gives user the extra impetus to return to the game on a regular basis and therefore improve their proficiency in reading without even realising it!
Overall this is a really good app that gives young children already on their journey in learning to read a way to help them continue to improve their reading skills and abilities.
