Luca Lashes Visits Mommy in the Hospital.
Luca Lashes is an interactive story-book that deals with theme of “firsts” or fears. Each app is a story with one of the themes. Due to its high quality and story-telling sensitivity, we have given the app an EAS Certification of 5 Stars.
The team behind Luca Lashes have created a series of apps that tell stories based around the theme of “firsts”. The first day at school, the first time mummy was in hospital, the first trip to the dentist etc... The idea is that Luca has “magical powers” (he is actually braver) when he bats his lashes twice! Therefore, whatever new or difficult situations that he is in, he can get through them successfully.
In this story, Luca’s mother is in hospital. The story centres on the hospital visit. The delivery of the story is also very well done due to the high quality of the illustrations and the interactivity of the illustrations (that turn into animations when touched!). There over 100 interactive features within each page. The idea is that the user can pause the story and then experiment by touching the different features of the illustration. As a result, when you touch on the light you can hear a sound and it turns on. If you press on the dog, he barks and when you tap the computer, it beeps. The same goes for the characters. Rather than there being figures of speech within the story, when you tap on the characters they make sounds or speak just to reinforce the story-line.
The idea is that you can read the story to yourself or with an adult/parent. Moreover, the app can also narrate to you and the words are highlighted as it reads along. These are wonderful features as they help with children’s literacy skills.
We particularly liked the concept of “firsts” for children as it creates the opportunity for emotional intelligence discussion. It probes the idea of “Fears” and the possibility of discussing them and making children more mature in how they approach new things.
In this particular story in which Luca’s mother is in hospital, the final section of the story offers advice to parents/adults on taking children to the hospital to visit loved-ones . We found this to be very interesting and beneficial to adults and children. It offers a fantastic opportunity to discuss difficult matters in a sensitive matter.
Another aspect of this app is that the music is all original and the illustrations and very pretty to look at. All an added bonus!
We hope that you enjoy this app and read together with your child too!
